"So you mean I'm going to fail?"
"Of course you are, this quest is impossible."
"So why am I going?"
"Because you promised you would."
"Yeah, but that was before I knew it was impossible. I think there's more honor in knowing when you're doomed, cutting your losses and going home than going on a quest when you know you're going to be a failure."
"If that were true, then why did you go on this quest to begin with? Why didn't you just run out to the battle field and tell your kin to go home?"
There was a deafening silence in the woods as if the world for miles and miles was waiting to hear how Mae would answer.
"But, Godfried," Mae breathed, biting her lip, "How can I do this? How can I really go on this quest when I know I'm fighting for nothing? How can I travel hopefully without hoping to arrive?"
"Hush, child. It's not as bad as that. I didn't say you wouldn't finish. I said you would fail."
