are you playing find the cucumber? [dream]

I had a curious dream last night. It started out as a conversation about magic as one way of getting things done, and how there are things that you could approach magically that you might also approach in other ways. For instance, (I said in the dream), if you asked a bunch of people to each go out and come back fifteen minutes later with ten cucumbers, they might each pursue the matter in a different way.

[... and then the dream shifted into this game/contest, following different people in pursuit of cucumbers...]

one person ran to the grocery store, because he is a wicked fast runner and that just made sense.
someone else (and this was apparently the magical approach) intuited which houses had people who had large stashes of cucumbers that they'd be willing to share.
i sent out a bunch of emails to people i thought would share their cukes.
another friend called a bunch of folks on the phone.
someone else bought whole pickles, and it was unclear whether or not they counted.

as a contest, i believe it was rather lame, and i don't think the dream ever got around to determining a winner or anything like that. the dream was really much more about how we each solve problems differently, and it was pretty cool.

i will often say: "there's only one way to find out," which is almost invariably followed by "actually, there are lots of ways to find out. we're librarians -- we can find out just about anything in at least five ways." there are some exceptions to this axiom, but it generally holds true. TIMTOWTDI.

so: how would *you* acquire a cucumber?
