Europe Summary Part 5: Mainz (9/25/08)

Oct 14, 2008 11:15

We took a walking tour of Mainz (pronounced Minez), where the two main attractions were the Gutenburg Museum and the Dom.  The Gutenburg Museum centers around printing press as the European inventor of the printing press was a man called Gutenburg, which turns out was not his family name but the name of the house in which his family lived.  In the museum, we were given a demonstration of how the printing press worked.  On display, copies of the Bible printed by the press could bee viewed.

While walking around Mainz, we passed by the Mainz Opera House.  The tour ended at the Dom, the city's cathedral.  A cathedral is called a Dom when that city, or at least the cathedral itself, is the seat of the Bishop or Archbishop.

Our tour guide had a high opinion of herself.  I found her quite annoying.  I could say other things about her, but I will refrain.  Needless to day, I did not like her very much.

After our excursion to Mainz, we continued our voyage and left the Rhine for the Main (mine) river.  Along the way, we passed through the city of Frankfurt but we did not stop there.

This particular portion of the tour was my least favorite part of the cruise up to that point.  It didn't help that our tour guide was horrible and that we found the museum to be uninteresting.  Museums are not that exciting, especially when the subject does not concern me.
