chapter 1 02; rette mich - rescue me
This used to be our secret, now I'm hiding here alone.
Can't tell but read our names on the wall and wash them off the stone.
I trusted you in every way, but not enough to make you stay.
Turn around, I've lost my ground.
Come and rescue me, I'm burning can't you see?
Come and rescue me, only you can set me free.
The empty bento boxes were stacked neatly in the empty seat next to Shota. After eating his lunch, he dozed off. The train made a stop but not many people got on board. They still had four seats all to themselves. They still had an hour and a half to go. For Shota to fall asleep immediately like that meant he was terribly exhausted.
Subaru wished he could be that way. He hadn't been able to sleep well for the past six months and it was taking a lot out of him. He didn't like it. Oh no. Not one bit.
He dug into his pocket and took out his cell phone. He scrolled through his phone book and found that Shingo's name and phone number were still in his phone database. He couldn't delete it.
His number remained on speed dial number one.
Subaru walked past Kazuya's ward on the way to Shota's ward. Apparently during the incident at Shingo's apartment, Shota hurt himself more by jumping on top of Shingo. A nurse was in Kazuya's ward, checking if everything was in order. After she checked the monitors and noted down his conditions on the brown clipboard in her hand, she stepped out of the room.
"U-Um, excuse me, miss?" Subaru called her.
She stopped and turned around. "Yes? Can I help you, sir?"
"H-How is he? I mean, Kamenashi..."
Her shoulders dropped and she slowly turned to face Kazuya's ward. There was a pregnant pause before she actually began speaking. During that pause, the beeping of the heart monitor was audible and unusually loud. "He has been that way for... for months now." She bit her lower lip and sighed. She tilted her head to the side and stared at Kazuya.
She spoke as if she had an emotional attachment to the patient.
"O-Oh..." was the only thing Subaru could say.
"Haven't I seen you before?" the nurse asked.
Subaru let out a nervous laugh. ""I guess you probably have... Shibutani Subaru, nice to meet you."
The nurse nodded. "Yeah... Yeah I know you." She stuck her right hand out to Subaru. Subaru stared at the hand. He knew it was for a handshake but not many Japanese people - especially women - would introduce themselves with a handshake. "Nishikido Nozomi. Nice to meet your acquaintance."
"Are you the nurse in charge?"
She shook her head. "Oh no. I'm one of the nurses on duty for Kamenashi-san. There are four of us."
"Taking care of one skinny guy?"
"Taking care of one skinny guy." She laughed.
His cell phone vibrated. It was a habit of his to set his cell on vibrating mode when he was taking public transportation. Common courtesy, you know. So you don't bother other passengers - though there were hardly any passengers on the train.
"Subaru?" called a woman's voice when he answered and brought the phone to his ear.
"Hi, 'kasan," he greeted his mother.
Ah, mother, he thought silently. His mother had gone through shit in the past six months. Of course, on top of her son being a famous rock star away from home, he also had to be a famous rock star away from home with a missing finger and in an asylum. He could only begin to imagine the pain and trouble he had put his mother through. But he was saving his best friend. And Subaru was the type of person who valued friendship.
Very, very much.
"Where are you now, dear?" It was a relief to hear his mother's voice calm for the first time in a long time.
Every time she visited him at the asylum - which could be counted with one hand - she would always tremble and shake. He never really told her what happened. He couldn't. At least not anytime soon. So he let her believe that for the past six months, he was insane. It was only after Shingo confessed his crimes while being chained up in an interrogation room that it was announced that Subaru wasn't really insane.
When the news got out, his mother could only cry.
"I'm in the train, 'kasan. I'm in the train. I'm on my way back home," he told her. He stared out the window. The trees came whooshing by. He checked his watch. "I'll be there in an hour."
"Do you need me to pick you up? Because I could get the car out and pick you up--"
"No. No, 'kasan. You don't have to get the car out and pick me up. Just, stay home. Alright? Stay home and cook me something really nice. I want to eat something really nice."
"O-Of course you do, honey. You've gone through so much." She was about to cry again. "I'll stay home and cook you something really nice. Yes. Something nice for you to eat. And I'll get your room ready for you."
"Thank you, 'kasan. I love you. I'll be home soon."
