Headline: “Immigrants take a day off”
http://www.startribune.com/462/story/404112.html This has got to be the worst of all possible headlines for a story of people rising up in favor of their sacrifices and contributions to this country being recognized. This is the quintessential American story; every generation there are people that are downtrodden and put down and exploited and eventually those people challenge the chains that bind them. This is when America works and when she is at her best.
The article is at least neutral in tone.
With the Press its more like this:

Other than this eyesore on the front page, the Strib’s front section was strangely topical with some good choices in what they covered, of course as always it is difficult to ascertain what kind of a job they did without a comparison to what they failed to cover, but this would be a difficult case to make.
Comparatively, the front page of the Press still managed to disappoint by throwing in a twisted crime story to grab headlines. It reminded me of the “True Crime” stories of the 50’s that were latched unto by the comic books of the period.
Though I really can’t blame the modern news cycle, the trend towards bloodiness is far older. The most obvious would probably be the infamous Whitechapel murders that would come to be known to the world as the work of “Jack the Ripper.” Certainly before this crimes of sufficient grotesqueness did see the press from time to time, but after this series of murders (and, no doubt the series of news stories that increased subscription rates) the supply and demand of grisly crimes in the news increased dramatically.
