BlackPaladin has a very active blog and on Oct 14 he commented on space exploration and whether it was worth it with a quote from Sinclair on Bab 5 - the one where if we don't leave nothing we have accomplished will be worth it long-term.
Yeah, that quote sung to me when I first heard it and it still does.
My personal opinion is children leave the crib. It is part of growing up. The human race must leave the planet eventually if it is going to continue to grow.
Mother Earth may seem cold, unfair, and capricious on her good days - like parents seem to small children. But she loves us, we are made for her. When we leave the crib, we will go to places we are not wanted, that will actively work against us. Just like an adolescent is shocked once they loose the support of their parents (food? laundry? what?!?), we are going to get shocked when we get out there on levels unexpected and unknown.
And then the human race will truly grow up.
