Quite frankly, Kem, it seems like a good path for you. Yes, an explicit goal of military training is to smash you to pieces so it can rebuild you into a better soldier/sailor/pilot. Yes, it requires a massive degree of commitment and discipline.
Sorta sounds like the college experience, really... an explicit goal is to gradually remake you into a more intelligent, informed, and reasonable person (i.e. make you better) and requires a massive degree of commitment and discipline even if it's internally motived rather than externally. I personally believe, however, that you have it in you and that learning the skill of making a decision, sticking to it, and reasonably articulating your justification would do you an immense service.
As to someone who can advise you well, if you still have Joey's Y!IM contact info, try to track him down. He's a Navy veteren, as I'm certain you know, and can give you the best advice, better even than someone who's lived in close proximity to the military life (with all due respects to you, Dawn). But I reiterate: I think that you would be well-served and made into an even better person though military service. Or through completion of doctorate but as you said, your finances are a tad too tight for that.
