because it's too long to post in a comment. The Destruction Junction is starting up practices again. I encourage any and all of you to join with me. Even if you don't want to skate, the derby is look for refs, time/score/penalty keepers, cheerbeaters, and other volunteers. Here's the info from
the djdd myspace page:
Beginners practice starts up again in February of 2008, Thursdays from 5:30pm-7pm, and takes place at Empire Roller Rink. Cost is currently $5 per session.
In order to participate you must be 18+ years old, and you must be female. Pick up a cheap set of pads (wrist guards, knee pads and elbows) from a local store (Dreamcatcher, Wal-Mart, Target, and MC Sports all carry cheap beginner pads) and bring a helmet and a mouth guard ($1 at Wal-Mart in the sporting goods section). Skate rental is included in the $5 practice fee. We will do our best to answer all of your questions at practice. In order to graduate from beginner practices you will be required to pass a skills test and obtain primary insurance. Feel free to just show up as a newbie at beginners practice- and check back here for date/time changes and cancellations.
We are also always looking for refs! Refs must be 18+, can be male or female, must have valid health insurance, some skating ability, and must attend 75% of all bouting practices (approx once a week, or 3-5 practices a month). In order to ref at a bout, you must also pass a written rules test and a skating skill test. Protective gear is required for refs as well.
Jeerleaders/Cheerbeaters are cheerleaders for DJDD! Both males and females are welcome. You must be 18+.
We also need scorekeepers, timekeepers, statisticians, and penalty recorders! Scorekeepers keep track of the score at bouting events. Timekeepers keep the time clock going at bouting events. Statisticians take down an official record of sports stats such as whips, blocks, points scored, etc. Penalty recorders record penalties during bouts. All positions may be subject to a practice attendance requirement (1-3 bouting practices prior to the event, depending on responsability level).
Volunteers are needed to help with sponsorship and other committee work. Derby skaters are also required to participate in at least one committee once they graduate from beginner practice, and are welcome to participate as beginners.
Please contact destructionjunction@gmail.com for more information on any of the above positions. For info on jeerleading you may contact them directly at their myspace page, if you prefer:
