Pandemic

In the story the pandemic the author does a great job of painting a visual image in the minds of the reader.

Lewis speaks using a calm, informative voice, to tell his audience about the experiences he has had in different parts of Asia. Because the stories he tells of the men and women living in poverty, desaese and depression are already so sad and powerful on their own he doesn't need to use words to describe how they make him feel. The fact that he spends so much time working with and beside these people, shows that he cares about them, He wants to do something to change the way things are for this country and bring them back to  the way things used to be.

The author is trying to reach out to us. The wealther, more developed nations, who have the power and the resources to make a difference. He is trying to reach out to the more educated people with some knowledge of HIV. Hes reaching to people who have can afford to help and those who can recognize that the problems Africa are facing are much larger then our own.

The purpose of the lecture is to inform, persuade and inspire the wealthier parts of the planet. He is trying to inform them of the true stories and the reality of the AIDS pandemic. He is trying to persuade and inspire them to do thier part to change the situation. He informs us that there are ways to change the state of the country, and we just need to give them the supplies they need.

He does this by first, using personal experiences to describe to the reader how things used to be. The smiling, eager students in the classrooms, the poetry and the joy he experienced in the Africa he once knew. Then he introduces the reader to the pain the people who have AIDS or have been affected by its presents. He uses real examples and stories to bring emotion to his writing. Death, agony and unimaginable sadness are brought it. He inspires people to want to make a change, that so desparetely needs to be made. Then he brings the tone of the piece back up and shows more examples of the positive things that have been happening in Africa as a result of these efforts. This is all done to make people realize that their efforts can still make a difference in the larger picture.

I would like to know about the authors background, like how life was for him growing up. I wonder if he grew up in a wealthy family or a poor family. I could see either way affecting his passion for africa.
