Post Mortem: New History

Ok…so, after the previous two episodes, this one is a huge letdown. I'll warn you, this one is going to be short because there's just not much here. Let’s get going on this one.

First of all, welcome back Izzie, don’t let the door hit your butt on the way out! I think sometime, a long time ago I actually liked Izzie, but these days, I’m just so over her. It was a bit of a chicken shit way to come back…making Mer wait in the old intern hall, thinking she could fly under the radar, bullying her friends. It was just all kinds of wrong. And I absolutely love that Meredith hit Izzie for leaving, someone needs to knock her halfway to Tuesday. And seriously, the whole “You’re pregnant” question, that was lame to use that in the promo. Just seriously lame…there are not other words.

I did enjoy the Izzie and Dr. Singer dynamic. I thought it was interesting that he thought he was advising a teenage Isobel rather than Izzie in her current circumstances and the advice was still relevant. The whole “Isobel is going to be an excellent doctor someday, if she doesn’t get too distracted” was perfect. Interesting parallel to her life, although I’m not sure that you can call Denny and cancer distractions so much as bumps in the road.

And on the Alex and Izzie relationship. I thought it was interesting that they had Alex play the avoidance game just like Izzie has been over the last few weeks. I just hate to see this happen to him because he’s really been through too much. He can’t catch a break and it just kills me to see him go through the pain that Izzie keeps putting him through. Honestly, at this point, I’m all for breaking them up and sending Izzie away for a very long time and giving Alex some happiness with Reed or someone. But on a more positive note, I really enjoyed the Meredith and Alex interaction in this one. That’s such an interesting friendship because they are so alike and I think they really found kindred spirits in each other. So that’s at least one positive thing to come out of this.

So, I am still unhappy with Owen. I’m glad he brought Christina a cardio god, but here’s the deal, he acted like an ass last week and this week, it’s like it never happened. What gives? I absolutely loved Christina’s reaction to Teddy because, seriously, I would probably react in the same way in that situation. But mostly, I was just so happy for her to be back in her element because she’s really been lacking in her “Christina-ness” and we really need that on Grey’s now…it’s just lacking in having an edge, things are so blah right now. And ps: I’m really loving the Jackson and Christina vibe, the two cardio people…I’m seeing a parallel with the whole Burke/Christina relationship. Oh…and the whole “Private Benjamin” and “Desert Storm Barbie” nicknames…love it!

For weeks, I’ve been saying in these that the Chief is an ass and he’s totally out of bounds. Well, I think we found out why tonight. Was I the only person going “That makes so much sense,” when they put the montage together showing his behavior as it relates to his alcoholic relapse? I freaked out because this totally makes sense with his erratic behavior, his anger issues, his inability to process human emotion, etc. All the pieces of the puzzle came together in this one and it made perfect sense. I’m still not in his corner, because seriously? He’s preaching to Thatcher about alcoholism and he’s relapsing? Not cool! And, he’s now committed the kind of surgical error that he would fire a resident for…when the shoe’s on the other foot it doesn’t feel so good, does it? Side Note: I loved the Chief and Bailey interaction and I love that he’s her work-husband…hilarious!

On to our favorite couple Mark and Lexie…oh yeah, where were they???? Not enough Lexie in this one, but I think it is important that she knows what the Chief did. I have a feeling that we’re going to be revisiting this in a future episode. Mark was just too cute in this episode. If I can’t have Mark and Lexie interaction, at least I got Mark. First of all, I loved that Mark and Callie were both present when Adele accused Bailey of having an affair with the Chief. And I thought it was great that Mark objected to being Callie’s work-husband. I wanted to scream, “He has a work-wife, it’s Lexie, so back off!” And it was absolutely priceless that Mark was the gossip of the group. It’s sooo cute. And so unexpected from the standpoint that everyone thinks Mark is such a man-whore but he’s just like everybody else who wants a good piece of gossip.

Finally, they had to show that promo? I’m not looking forward to any of this. I was on the bandwagon that this could be ok if done right. But I’m now I’m convinced that it’s not going to be done in such a way that it really shows Mark’s growth. I think it’s going to be bad…so I’m not looking forward to next week. It’s likely going to be our Mark centric episode but we’re probably going to get gypped on the Mark and Lexie interaction. I’m kind of dreading the episode just based on a 20 second clip…not good :(

Quotes:

“Wish Dr. Stevens would give me the details. I’m just the person who saved her life.” Christina to Izzie…this was perfect, I really wanted Christina to be offended by Izzie’s actions because of her involvement in getting her treatment.

“I appreciate the gift, I really do, but you need to take it back and exchange it for a real cardio God.” Christina to Owen

“Go torture the new attending.” Bailey to Christina…because this was spot on for Bailey and a perfect assessment of Christina.

“I kind of like them together.” Mark referring to Bailey and the Chief as work-husband and wife…because seriously? That was just too freaking cute to see him in the role of the gossip king of Seattle Grace :)

“You are the worst gossip.” Callie to Mark…because I couldn’t stop laughing over this one.

“I am your husband and you didn’t give me the benefit of the doubt…so you know what, I can’t forgive you either.” Alex to Izzie…because who wasn’t thinking that someone ought to put her in her place?

Overall Grade: B-

This was just an okay episode for me. It sort of seemed like the episode jumped around a lot and there wasn’t a whole lot of continuity in the storyline, I don’t know why I felt that way, but it seemed to be my prevailing thought throughout. Honestly, the Mark scenes saved this from being a C episode. Not enough Mark and Lexie to be good…we need more!
