Today's subject line comes from a song that Cinderella sang in the TV version of her story years and years ago. And yes, I sing the song on occasion, but today it came to mind as I was thinking of my new writing room, still coming together at my sweetheart's house, and how I have already put that chair and room to good use.
I've already drafted a brand new picture book manuscript there, that arrived overnight the night before almost intact and entire. It still needs revision, but my first readers agree that the idea works and the draft was really solid - it just needs a bit of spit and shine.
And just yesterday, I started poems for a new poetry collection there. To be fair, the idea arrived the night before while I was falling asleep, but I made sure to do the actual writing down of things in my new writing space. I figure it makes sense to establish a connection in my brain between the room and writing/creativity, and to reinforce it as best I can.
Speaking of my room, the latest addition to its décor is a lovely card I received from my Aunt Martha, herself a fine artist with a show going on in Amherst, New Hampshire at the Amherst Town Library until mid-January. She encouraged me to make sure I spend a few hours alone in that room during the holidays, even with the girls at home. Don't you love other artists/writers who really understand things?
It truly is a good thing to have a room of one's own. Or a corner and a chair.
Here's a really young Lesley Ann Warren, the Cinderella I remember from my childhood, singing "In My Own Little Chair":
