One concert you ought not miss

My friend Lisa and I went to the Muse concert tonight (with Silversun Pickups opening). It was the third night of their U.S. tour, and I can tell you that despite having been to quite a lot of concerts over the year, this one had the sickest stage show I've ever seen. Lights, cameras, action, lasers, oversized eyeball balloons (that pop - disturbing, but cool). Incredible.

And musically, this band is extraordinarily tight. In fact, Matthew Bellamy, the lead singer, is one of those rare performers who actually sounded even better in concert than he does on the recordings, which is saying something. All three of the band members are exceedingly talented musicians. I have no idea what their actual training is, but there are some serious classical and jazz influences in what they do, as well as apparent influences from 70s rock, 80s pop, and Queen, with a possible smattering of show tunes. That said, what they play is rock - and it is made of awesome. And when you add the amazing staging and lights, well, you have a recipe for WIN.

Something else to like about the band? They contacted the local radio station sponsoring the concert and said they wanted to do a contest and meet some fans - by spending the afternoon at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Fans made videos to try to win a day with Muse, and 5 of them got to bring a friend and spend the day with the band, looking at art. Is that not cool?

Here's the tour schedule. Seriously, if you live nearby and they aren't sold out, get yourself a ticket. (But unless you like crazy moshpit action, stay off the floor.)
