the greatest mistake

it was january 1979, not long after the new year when a married couple stopped in davenport iowa to stay overnight due to a horrible snowstorm. where they were coming from i do not know, but i do know, they had their two kids at a relatives and that night, while the winds howled and the snow dropped from the sky like bombs they made love.

it hadn't been long since they baught their first home together in a brand new development on the far east side of des moines called Pleasant Hill. Their house was brand new and very nice compared to the apartment they were living in near drake university in Des Moines. When they returned however they got quite a surprise. Not the kind that is at home waiting for you when you arrive, but they kind you carry with you and don't realize it. a baby boy in the form of a fetus. An unplanned baby boy at that, but being the couple James, and Roberta Krantz were a lutheran and a devout catholic, abortion was out of the question. Plus Jim was making decent money working for the familly bussiness Krantz Bros. flooring, and Roberta was making a decent cash as a receptionist for Roberts and Dibdahl, a const. supplies company.

Nine months rolled around and it was time for the babies arrival. At first the nearly newborn tried to come out backwards, or breech, i believe the doctor delivering was quoated saying "this one's comin out mooning the world" So they had to perform a cessarian procedure on Roberta, and cut the boy from his mother's stomach. Once out in the world, this boy had a full head of dark brown hair, with a few grey ones mixed in. He had dark brown eyes and was as pretty as any girl could have wanted to be as an infant.

Their was some disagreances on what to name the child. Jim wanted to name the boy Kevin, after his brother in law, but soon they decided to name him Kelly, after Roberta's second eldest little brother, who's rightful name is John Kelly, but since they had another boy named John, people reffered to him as Kelly. Since James, and Roberta's other children both had saints names for middle names (Chad Micheal, and Matthew Steven) they decided to do the same and went with Paul.

Kelly Paul Krantz was scribed on my birth certificate on Sept. 18th 1979 around 7:30 in the evening at Des Moines general hospital.

the third installment to my parents litter, nine years younger than my eldest brother Chad, and five years younger than Matt. A quiet baby, not one to throw fits unless i was forced to sleep anywhere but my bed at home. Many trips to lake rathbun were cut short due to constant bellowing. Allergic to breast and cow milk i had to have goat milk for the first years of my life. My parents constantly were getting compliments in public on how much of a beautiful girl they had, all the way up until i was about two years old, when they finally gave me my first haircut, and the long curly brown hair that went to the middle of my back was sheared off. This took place in my fathers hometown of Johnston Iowa at a barber shop that he went to as a youth until the present. I was not happy about this at all.

and so it was, a young boy born into lower middle income in the suburbs of the very most middle of the midwest. An attention loving jokester who when nearly made my mother crash her car after asking "mom do birds have eyebrows?" would repeat said question just for a laugh, and for reassurance. A child who wanted to play basketball for the Iowa Hawkeyes, and who liked to watch birdies, and believed monsters were in his fathers reel to reel tape recorder. A little tot who was reading and forming his writing habits at age three.

James and Roberta couldn't have been happier with their creation.
