So on Wednesday, my sister and I went to see The Escort, a new play starring Maggie Siff and afterwards, to my complete fangirl delight, I got to meet her! This isn't really a review, but more of a breakdown of the play. If you don't want to know, don't read, also it's pretty damn long-winded. You have been warned...
The play...
Maggie was basically the narrator of the play. She came out in the beginning wearing nothing but a bathrobe and very high heels. She said (all very tongue-in-cheek) that because there was nudity in the play and the playwright generally finds nudity to be distracting and because Maggie’s character, Charlotte, is supposed to have double-D implants, her nudity would be represented by this:
Maggie opens her robe to reveal a sort of anatomically correct nude bathing suit with very erect nipples and a landing strip on her na-na. lol.
Then the young, male lead, Gabriel Sunday, came out to reveal how his nudity would be represented. He had on nude, anatomically correct, boxer/briefs complete with a long, swinging schlong.
The play starts off with Charlotte in the gynecologist’s office. She’s looking for a less judgmental doctor because she is a high class call girl. The doctor, Rhona Bloom, is surprised by this information, but also quite taken by Charlotte. Charlotte and the doctor have a very interesting convo about Charlotte’s lifestyle. Maggie is very bold and funny.
Then we meet one of Charlotte’s johns who likes to take it up the ass. Maggie has a suitcase with a large black dildo, which she proceeds to slather up with lube as the doctor bends over the bed. Charlotte looks at the audience and says, “I’m sure you can imagine the rest.” Scene over.
Doctor Bloom’s 13 year old son, Lewis ( played by the same actor who plays the male escort), talks to the audience about his addiction to internet porn and proceeds to describe the many different weird types of porn he’s been watching. Rhona has an argument with him about his porn habit, which he vehemently denies and as soon as she leaves the room, he's right back at it.
Doctor Bloom’s ex is the other Doctor Bloom, played by James Eckhouse (the dad from 90210), who I will refer to as Male Bloom from here on out. He is more laid back about their son’s addiction, but Rhona wants him to talk to their son about it. His solution is to buy the kid some Hustler mags and tell him to go outside and not spend so much time on the internet.
Charlotte goes to see Rhona again because she has developed a bladder infection. Rhona refers her to Male Bloom because he is a specialist. He is really rude to Charlotte because he thinks she’s just a dirty prostitute. But Charlotte totally calls him on it and puts the smack down on him. Totally reminded me of badass Tara.
Charlotte than has to go back to Rhona because the antibiotics that Male Bloom prescribed her have given her a yeast infection. Rhona asks her if Male Bloom was rude to her and Charlotte just says, “ I set him straight.” Rhona opens up to Charlotte more and more with each visit and it becomes very clear that she is lonely. Charlotte convinces her to “see” one of her colleagues, Mathew, who is also her practice partner. Lol.
The scene between Rhona and Mathew starts off hysterically. She is really nervous and funny and very taken aback when he whips out his big dick. Lol. But then she gets too stuck in her own head and starts asking him what went wrong in his life to make him become a prostitute. He tells her nothing went wrong and he enjoys his profession, used to be a med student, but it wasn't for him. Rhona can’t let it go (it always comes back to her son) and keeps badgering him, essentially killing the mood, and ultimately insulting and slapping him when he insults her back. They some how talk it out and she ends up going through with it, but we don’t see that part.
Charlotte feels that she is gaining a friend in Rhona which she seems genuinely excited about. It becomes clear that Rhona doesn’t feel quite the same way. They meet up for lunch where they discuss Rhona’s "date" with Mathew. Charlotte seems really happy and positive. She tells Rhona she’ll probably want a baby in a few years…no man necessary and would like her help with that. She also tells Rhona about her favorite nephew and shows her a pic. Then she asks about Lewis (Rhona's son) and asks to see a pic and wants to know where he goes to school because she thinks her nephew needs to change schools. You can tell that Rhona is getting more and more uncomfortable. Rhona finally fakes her way out of lunch by pretending to have to get back to the hospital. Charlotte is hurt. There is a snarky waiter, again, played by Eckhouse, whom Charlotte yells at to "Fuck off!" in her anger. She is upset and sort of realizes that Rhona is lying to her.
In the next scene at the gyno office, Charlotte is lying down, huddled up on the examining table. When Rhona comes in, Charlotte tells her that she may have a vaginal abrasion. Rhona is shocked when she examines her and finds her all “torn up.” Charlotte tells her that she serviced 32 men over the course of 2 days. They were athletes who she was helping to let out their aggression so that they can go home to their wives and be tender. Rhona is horrified. She tells Charlotte that she can no longer be her doctor. Charlotte wants to work out their problems, but Rhona tells her it’s impossible because she is disgusted by her. She leaves Charlotte alone in the office. Maggie has a really great moment where she has to take in this rejection and then begins to cry.
Then we open on a scene where Male Bloom and Charlotte are standing by a bed getting dressed. She has found her way to get back at Rhona. Male Bloom is going on and on about how good it was and so on. Charlotte is tuning out. He becomes angry that she seems to be disinterested in his conversation and tells her that his hour isn’t over yet. Charlotte goes off on him and basically tells him that he sucks and that his ex is a cunt.
The Blooms get together. They fear there could be more repercussions from the wrath of Charlotte, especially since she has so much information about their son. They come up with a plan to frame her for child abuse or something (they kind of lost me here). Charlotte does indeed seek out Lewis while he’s waiting at the bus stop after school. She tells him that his body/sexuality aren’t dirty and that he should never let anyone tell him otherwise. Then she kisses him on the cheek and leaves. Lewis seems both bewildered and amused by this whole thing.
The play ends with Maggie doing a monologue about how she (Charlotte) went to prison while Rhona happily is at home with her son. Tears stream down Maggie’s face. The end.
So, I really enjoyed the play. It was pretty funny and Maggie was fabulous, as were all the other actors. Of course, it had its dramatic elements as most plays do, and I thought it all worked pretty well.
So as to how I ended up meeting Maggie…
I was staying with my cousin and so she was nice enough to drop my sister and I off at the play and offered to pick us up afterwards. We were sitting outside the theater waiting for our ride. Most of the audience members were long gone. I saw James Eckhouse walk by and I was like, “Whoa. Maybe all the actors will come out this way.” Sure enough, a few seconds later, Maggie and the young, male actor, Gabriel came out together (looking a bit cozy, if I do say so myself).
I struggled for a minute. I finally called out, “Maggie.” She stopped, looked at me and said, “Yes?” Gulp.
I said I was a big fan and she did great in the performance and that I love Sons of Anarchy. She said, “Thank you very much." Then I asked if I could have a pic with her and she said yes. The young actor with her asked me if I wanted him to take it. My sister said that she would take it and urged him to get in the pic too, but he said, “No, let them have their Sons of Anarchy pic.” I am dead. *_*
Honestly, I felt so damn stupid the whole time cause I never ask people for this stuff, but I did it this time for my twitter/tumblr/LJ peeps. ;P She was really nice about it and soft spoken and maybe a bit shy. We took the pic. I swear, I barely looked at her when I was talking because I was too damn embarrassed.
Then I felt bad cause she and her costar got ambushed by these 4 kinda aggressive, “what’s up bro” types. I couldn’t leave because I was still waiting for my ride, so I just sat there with Maggie standing right in front of me. These dudes kept asking them lame questions about the play and kept them standing there when I’m sure they just wanted to go home, but were being too nice. I saw Maggie grab her co-star’s arm and give it a squeeze like, “let’s get outta here.”
Also, she’s really quite tiny, not in height, she is about my height., 5’4’’ but her over all size. She’s little and very pretty. <3 and really it’s a good thing I was nervous or else I probably would have asked her about bb Pinky and wearing vag pads with Charlie Hunnam between her thighs. ;P
I took some awful pics with my phone. Sorry they came out so crappy, but I was trying to be sneaky and there was no flash.
View of the stage from our seats:
That's Maggie...
Taking a bow...
And some not so awful pics...
Outside the theater:
and me with Maggie (yes, I cut myself out of the picture cause bleh....) but that's my hair and ear. ;P
