My 2021 HP Halloween Entry

Nov 03, 2021 21:20

Here's my double drabble for this year's hp_halloween fest. My recipient was my good friend iselima. She asked for "drabbles about cold, foggy, spooky nights. Romantic, angsty or melancholic."

It's not too hard to come up with foggy spookiness (or spooky fogginess) on Halloween! I've written better HP Halloween entries; I've written worse. I had fun, which is the main thing.

Title: Goodbye
Characters: Filius Flitwick, Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank, Minerva McGonagall
Rating: G
Word Count: 200
Summary: Professor Flitwick and Professor Grubbly-Plank help a friend on Samhain.

The moment Filius saw Wilhelmina searching the Restricted Section, he guessed what she was doing. She guessed the same about him when he entered the stacks.

They looked at each other, then nodded.

"It usually doesn't work," Filius observed mildly.

"True," she agreed, her weather-beaten face sad.

"And it's difficult."

"Very."

"But she needs it. The chance to say goodbye."

"Aye, she does." Wilhelmina paused. "It's no small thing, saying goodbye."

"She'd do it for us."

"In a heartbeat."

They could speak no more, lest their intent disturb the result.

But Wilhelmina thrust out her hand, and Filius shook it.

***

Near midnight on Samhain, Minerva left the castle.

She wouldn't know why she did, but she would be powerless to resist.

Filius could not speak to her. But he could follow her, unnoticed.

They moved silently through the foggy night, hearing hooting owls and rustlings that might have been leaves.

Or spirits.

The spell was complex, dangerous, but Filius had cast it. Wilhelmina had, too. Only true friends could do it.

And it could work only tonight, when the Veil thinned.

Minerva stopped as a glow appeared in the mist.

She spoke, and Filius smiled.

"It's you, Severus! And Albus!"
