What I Want Most

Enough bookshelves! That's what I want most. Oh, sure, I could stop buying books and even get rid of hundreds a few, so that I wouldn't need new shelves, but yeah. The likelihood of that happening is as slim as a first edition of Poe's "Tamerlane".

So you can imagine how much I enjoy looking at articles like this one, about where to put more Read more... )

I saw a piece about bookshelves built into the stairs once, and it seemed like a clever use of space.

Hm. Going UP the stairs I would constantly be distracted by an enticing book. Going DOWN would make my head go all woozy and I'd probably plummet to my death. But what a way to go, surrounded by books!!

They look lovely, and it's a very practical idea. But we're having plain wooden stairs inside the living area, and it's a real dust collector. I have no idea why, but the stairs are the common meeting place of our local dust mote commune, and they seem to celebrate there nightly. No way I'm going to subject my books to that.
But shelves on the walls of the staircase would be awesome - and could be protected better against the dust motes, I think.

OMG. I YEARN FOR IT.

*piles more books into boxes*

The major thing I dream of when it comes to One Day I'll Be A Real Grown-up, is having my own place, where I can have bookshelves EVERYWHERE instead of just in my room...

I'm sorry to tell you that there is NO SUCH THING as "enough bookshelves." The best one can hope for is continued access to more bookshelves. "Enough bookshelves," like the mythical unicorn, are nothing more than a beautiful illusion.

My house will someday (sooner rather than later, I fear), look like this...

Sad, but true -- or not "enough" for long, at any rate. I'll fill up all available space in no time.

Too true. The best solution we've found is the slim book boxes from Levenger. You can stack 'em, you can line 'em up... I might even be typing on one as we speak.

Ah, I love Levenger. I used to just see the catalogue, but once in Boston I found an actual store. Heavenly.

I have always dreamed of being able to have my own library in my house. I even designed one when I was in college as a project for an architecture class I was taking. It would have floor to ceiling bookshelves in warm woods, with a ladder that would travel around the room on a rail, as I am fun-sized. *g* There would be a fireplace and comfy chairs and stained-glass panels with scenes from my favorite books would cover the tall narrow windows. Also there would be a glass door that lead out into the garden, so that I could read on a bench amongst the flowers on lovely summer days. Just as soon as I win that lottery . . . .

This is my dream exactly! My partner trained as an architect, and she and I have grand plans for our post-lottery library. She's "fun-sized," too /g/, but here's another case in which size doesn't matter. Floor-to-ceiling is going to involve a ladder no matter what our sizes. I actually want two galleries running around three sides of the room, with spiral iron staircases at either end.
