DES: Data Encryption Standard.

DES was introduced by the American government in 1977 and was initially developed by IBM. In its complete version this American invention can only be used with the permission of the American government. (Information courtesy of Code Breaking: A history and exploration by Rudolf Kippenhahn)

In the DES system, the plaintext is written in the form of binary numbers and divided into blocks of sixty-four numerals, into chains of the form 011001101010001101001.........In computer speech these are blocks of sixty four bits. Each block undergoes a complicated procedure. See here.
