So last night I started a new short stoy and wrote almost 600 words. It started out as a rewrite of a story I'd already written but already it has more depth and the character has more angst. Love that. I want to keep it around 5000 words, though, so I gotta get into the action soon.
Submitted my short for Blue Kingdoms: Buxom Buccaneers the other day. Hopefully the editors will like what they see.
After I submit the current short story project to MZB's open antho call, its back to work on Through the Portal. I've got some good ideas about how to make it better. For one thing, I'm going to have the protagonist drive the action instead of letting the action happen to her, and, you know, that can do nothing but improve the story and tension and all that. It's such a basic tenet of writing and I have to remind myself about it all the time, especially in novel-length works: the protag drives the story, the story doesn't drive the protag. It's something I need to work on, obviously.
