I was watching a Good Eats episode on vanilla, and learned that of 3 main vanilla producers/areas, to avoid mexican extracts [not beans, just extracts] because they contain a toxin that was banned in the US some time ago via adding tonka bean extracts, which taste like vanilla.
The toxin find is coumarin.... yes, this is a precursor to warfarin, an anticoagulant medication I'm on.
Warfarin, I came to find,. was deveoped originally as a rat poison
Isn't TV great? (read: sometimes you're better off not knowing)
