I was on call (yet again) yesterday.
Our 4th year med student who has been on call with me so far this month is now done with her sub-I, and therefore I have several more patients to round on. Now, that I don't mind so much, but it was just fun to have her around! Luckily we get a brand new 4th year student on Monday - yay!
Call was typical - 1-2hours of cumulative sleep, interrupted by many, many calls, a couple of C-sections and admissions to the transitional nursery for sepsis workup, and a new admission with a birth hypoxic event, etc, etc, who needed a new UVC line. I got to place the line, but unfortunately it went to the liver, so we had to pull it back.
I feel pretty satisfied with the procedures I've been able to do since starting my NICU rotation - UVC and UAC lines, arterial sticks, LPs (of course), and even some needle aspirations of pneumothoraxes. I wish that I've had more intubation experience though. Oh well, I will certainly have more than enough time to learn in the next 3 years!
I think I'm starting to glimpse the beginning of intern blues, mostly the result of sleep deprivation! I hope all will seem better after a good night of sleep.
So what's left of my NICU month? One more week, 2 more calls (makes 9 this month), and 2 more days off! Yes that's right, tomorrow I have my day off, and I definitely deserve it! I will be sleeping in as late as possible :) And perhaps I will indulge in some retail therapy if I feel up to it!
