Happy Thanksgiving Ladies and Gents,
I did something a little different this year. I volunteered at the Bernandi Senior Center, where I helped deliver prepared hot and cold dishes full of traditional Thanksgiving dishes like turkey and gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potato pie, cranberry sauce, etc. I only had 5 stops, and all except 1 lady would open the door for me. When I returned to the senior center, I received a certificate for my help and a nice set of drinking mugs (one for coffee and one see-through water bottle). There's a big package of hot cocoa and green tea too. Nice.
Even though the event started out a little rocky, I learned two important things from this experience. 1) I need to improve my Spanish conversation skills if I'm going to do this again, and 2) I probably should just stick to volunteer gigs that don't involve me interacting directly with the public. Usually I volunteer for events that involve me setting up and breaking down booths and/or checking in other volunteers and giving them directions about this/that/and the other. Anything involving organization or preparation always seems to work well.
volunteering,
