God, I still miss Santa Barbara. Its demise in 1993 was pretty much the end of soaps for me (with the exception of Otalia, of course) and I haven't really watched much since.
It was the most extraordinary show, wasn't it? It's hard to explain to someone who never watched. One Life as it currently exists reminds me of it in some ways. BTW did you know that CC made a one week appearance on the show? Stole every scene she was in right til she was laying dead on the floor. Poor silly drug dealer in a negligee.
But like you, I grew up on soaps (with babysitters and a mother who adored Roman and Marlena), and I still feel a little nostalgic each time one is cancelled.
The original Roman and Marlena were amazing. I was never really down with Fake Roman/John Black. Though he sure gave Joey Tribbiani lots to work with. :)
CC and I were talking about growing up as soap kids at the Venice event last October. And I said to her "It hurts my heart to see these shows going one by one." I think it's people like her who feel the same way who are going to keep the art form going on the web and in other formats. It won't be the same, but the art form will survive.
