Okay, this is a short one shot that came to mind after seeing the sides to 704. My muse went to a happy place full of ideas and speculations and this is what was born. If you've not read the sides and don't plan to then don't read this... it is just my speculations and hope and well my muse being wishful, but who knows I could be right and wouldn't want to spoil anything for anyone.
Callie walks through the doors of the pediatric unit, having been paged by Arizona. She looks around and smiles when she sees Arizona standing at the nurse’s station talking to one of the nurses.
“Dr Robbins, You paged?” Callie asks walking over and standing beside Arizona. Callie smiles politely at the nurse, before flashing Arizona one of her thousand watt smiles.
Arizona looks over her shoulder at Callie, “Dr Torres.” She greets professionally before excusing herself from the nurse. Arizona returns Callie’s smile, with one of her own magical smile, before replying. “Yes, I need a consultation.” She explains as they enter an empty exam room, x-rays and scans in her hand.
“You need one? Or you have a patient that needs one?” Callie asks flirtatiously.
Arizona rolls her eyes at Callie’s flirtatious games, “I have a patient that needs one.” She responds innocently.
“What do we have? A broken wrist that needs setting? Leg? Oh… oh! Another patient fell off the roof and broke every bone in their body!?” Callie asks excitedly.
“Unfortunately, or should I say fortunately not. My patients name is Jake, he’s a 16 year old boy, with bone cancer to his leg.” Arizona explains, handing Callie the scans and x-rays. “I need your opinion on the best course of treatment.”
Callie takes a moment to examine the x-rays, and then studies the MRI scans. “Best course of treatment would be an above the knee amputation.” Callie tells Arizona as she continues to study the scans. “I’m free this afternoon to operate. Would you like me to take the case from here?”
“I’ve already informed Jake and his father on the best course of treatment in my opinion. But he doesn’t want the operation.” Arizona explains.
“Why not?” Callie asks curiously, looking at Arizona.
“He’s a dancer. He told me to find him a new leg.” Arizona explains. “That’s where I thought your rockstar surgical skills could come in handy, so to speak.”
“Oh… You want me to build him a new leg?” Callie clarifies as realization of what Arizona is asking of her hits.
“I need your help Calliope. I'm asking you build my patient a leg, I need you to be the amazing surgeon you are. Is it possible?” Arizona asks hesitantly.
Callie walks over and clips all the x-rays and scans onto the white x-ray box, she turns on the light and steps back looking over every scan, and every little detail shown in the x-rays.
“I don’t know. Maybe… it won’t be easy.” Callie tells Arizona.
“But its possible?” Arizona asks hopeful.
“It would be a long difficult surgery and there is a very high chance that it won’t work. But I’ve done it before” Callie replies honestly. “I just want to make sure he knows he’d have a long recovery ahead of him. And I can’t promise that he’d ever get to dance again. I can try and save his leg, but I don’t know how much function he’ll have left after surgery” Callie admits.
“But if anyone can do this, it’s you Calliope, you’re amazing surgeon. You created cartilage in a jar for Christ sake. You managed to do the impossible.” Arizona says proudly.
Callie grins from ear to ear at the mention of her success and at seeing how proud Arizona is of her, “I’ll do the best I can, but as I said we need to make sure he knows, if things don’t go well that we may still have to amputate. But I’ll try and give him the best chance at keeping his leg.” Callie says. “You want to scrub in with me?” She asks Arizona.
“Really?” Arizona asks surprised.
“Yes, he is your patient. We can do this surgery together, you’re an amazing surgeon Arizona, and I think that together we’ll make a super amazing team.” Callie jokes using one of Arizona’s favorite words.
Arizona giggles at Callie’s use of her favorite word, “I’d love to scrub in with you Calliope. Actually I’d be honored to stand next to you in that OR and to help you ‘build a leg like god’” Arizona replies smiling.
“Great!” Callie replies excitedly, turning back to look at the x-rays. “I’m going to need the night, to think about the best way to go about this. Plus I’m going to have to collect every bit of titanium in the hospital again. I’ll get one of the interns to collect everything for me.”
Arizona walks up behind Callie and wraps her arms around her waist. “Okay. Just let me know if you need me to do anything for you okay?” Arizona tells her.
Callie nods her head softly and leans back into Arizona embrace. “How about you buy the pizza tonight and we can go over the case at home and brainstorm some ideas?” Callie suggests.
“Deal!” Arizona agrees.
Callie turns her head and places a soft kiss on Arizona’s cheek, “This will be the first time we’ll operate together, hopefully I’ll be able to concentrate with you across the table from me” Callie jokes grinning.
“I’m sure you’ll be fine Calliope.” Arizona laughs, placing a soft kiss on Callie’s lips.
“Maybe… just try not to look so sexy in there okay?” Callie tells Arizona.
“I’ll do my best.” Arizona replies giggling. “Oh… Maybe we’ll get to ‘celebrate’ after the surgery, if all goes well.” Arizona smirks.
“Don’t you worry, there will definitely be the best kind of ‘celebrating’ happening” Callie replies, spinning around in Arizona’s arms and kissing her passionately. Callie pulls back from the kiss, and out of Arizona’s arms. “Well I should go finish my rounds. You finish at six right?” Callie asks smirking when she sees how flustered Arizona is from the kiss.
“Um, yeah six.” Arizona murmurs.
“Good, I’ll see you at six and then we can finish this.” Callie says leaning in and placing a soft kiss on Arizona’s cheek before leaving the room.
Arizona looks at her watch and sighs when she sees that she still has five hours till her shift ends. She picks up her patients chart, walking out of the exam room and down the corridor towards Jake’s room, to fill him in on the surgery he has ahead of him.
