In 2015 we bought a new washing machine. They are supposed to count as durable goods. Logically, then, they come with a one-year warrantee. Several months ago Lesley started complaining about the amount of noise the washing machine makes. Knowing this to be a precursor to buying another new washing machine I dismissed the idea or told her she must be loading it wrong so that it was out of balance. Of course then I noticed that I couldn't hear the TV when I was washing clothes in the middle of the night.
Then, noticed "that's not supposed to look like that is it?"
No it's not. It looks like this underneath:
Happily, the internet may be the greatest thing ever invented in the history of the world. I say that because it is the repository of almost all of human knowledge, and most things you care about can be easily accessed with logically predictable keywords.
It turns out that the machine's bearings were shot (also ruining the drive axle). It had spun all of the bearing grease out across the floor and the bottom/inside of the machine.
This is such common problem that it was easy to diagnose, easy to find video demonstrations of repair, and simple to buy the parts kit form amazon to be delivered free the same same with Prime membership. (Amazon [and Amazon Prime] also belongs on the list of greatest things ever invented.) So I got to spend a few hours of MLKJ-Day and part of my CWS day completely disassembling and reassembling my washer.
