I've been using Chrome since Tuesday, as soon as I had the opportunity to
download it and soon made it my default browser. It picked up my bookmarks from Firefox 3 without a problem.
There was a lot of traffic in blog-space about the invidious EUC, which appeared to claim rights over everything that was pasted via Chrome (
see this entry for example) but
this turns out to have been a case of careless editing from a proforma.
There's a lot more discussion on
Rory Cellan-Jons's blog..
So what's all the fuss about?
The pluses are:
- anything you type into an interactive window is instantaneously spell-checked
- it's fast
- it's standards-compliant
- It's simple
.
The only negatives I can find are:
- There may be a security hole as it is based on an out-of-date version of the development environment(web-kit). However, it would appear that the effort in exploiting the flaw is considerable. Presumably it can be fixed simply by building with the patched version of web-kit.
- Many Firefox add-ons are not yet available. However, given that the back end uses Mozilla it will be easy to add them and this is only a beta after all.
- Certain aspects of Facebook don't work. Many links on pages show the right hover behaviour but clicking has no effect. I can live with this.
For me the spell checker is the big plus. I'm not an accurate typist and the spell checking in Livejournal is hopeless so I'm glad not to have to use it any more.
