The skinny brunette boy held out a spoonful of Tiramisu cake; "Say auum!"
"Auuum!....It's so delicious! More please!" She bashed her eyelashes in a childish way and ended up laughing at herself.

"Iie. This last one is for me na" Yabu pulled the cake away from Ai.

Ai gave a pout that kind of looked awkard on her. The brunette laughed at her.

"Pouts don't suit you, you know that?"

"EHH? Why not?!"

"You and your tomboyish looks..." But he left the sentence hanging. Ai was pouting for sure. She always wanted to look like the it girl in front of Yabu. So maybe she had a tomboyish look, but that's the least she wanted Yabu to think her of.

Yabu touched her chin and turned it until their eyes met. "But I like it. That awkward pout, your short brown hair and that golden star pendant around you neck" Ai gave a small chuckle, "You gave it to me"

"And it looks perfect on you" Yabu grabbed the pendant and kissed it. "Will you remember me until tomorrow?"

The question came out unexpectedly, Yabu himself didn't realize he had said it until Ai gave out a gasp. "Are you going somewhere?" Although they both knew what he meant.

"No no. I-I, didn't mean that. Just...always remember me ok?"

Ai's arm automatically hugged Yabu's neck "I'd never forget. Give me 100 years and I'll still remember your charming brown eyes, your sweet smile, the way your hair covers your right eye sometimes, even the outline of your jaw...everything..." and ended the sentence with a slight push of her peachy lips to the boy's soft, moist one. Little did she know, tears were running down his cheeks. He couldn't bare the thought of leaving Ai ever, the one that could make him smile at his time of hardship, the one that supported him in everything he did, even the most silliest of things and of course, the one who wasn't afraid to go out with Yabu. The boy who didn't have any hope to continue living.

He was sick, for many years of his life he was in pain. He had an aortic dissection, a disease that could kill the soul of any human being. Yabu convinced himself to wait for the day he’d die. To finally leave the world. But all that had been put to rest when he met Ai. She somehow accepted him…no one else would come near Yabu. Even his friends said they didn’t want to bond a deep relationship with him anymore because one day they would miss him too much. He didn’t know whether to feel offended or honored by those words. Yet Ai gave him a different perspective. She cheered him, she made him laughed and she made him feel what it was like to love someone.
……….........................................................................................................

“I prayed for you” Ai’s soft voice whispered into Yabu’s ear. He was lying on the hospital bed. Today he called it ‘His Final Day’. He was going to be operated but his chances for living is only 20% as the doctor says. But Ai believes that he’ll make it no matter what the doctor says. Yabu couldn’t help but shed a tear when Ai said so. She truly believed in him, even Yabu himself felt insecure.

“Have fun tonight ok?” Yabu weakly said to Ai. Tonight was the night Ai had been waiting for. She never felt as anticipated as before. For a long time Ai had been pursuing her dream as a singer. Tonight was an open show night for talented singers. Ai had been chosen and she would never let the chance slip away. Yes, Yabu was going to be operated today and perhaps not make it, and she would be auditioning in front of many singing contract dealers and her dream as a singer might come true.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

“Ai..ai…hold my hand” Yabu searched for Ai’s hand on his bed. “I’m here…I’m here…I won’t leave you”
“Love me?” Yabu asked.
“Cross my heart and all boundaries of the world” Ai replied.
“Will you always sit next to me forever?” Ai asked back.
Yabu winked, “For sure”
Yabu gave a large grin before entering the operating room.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Three days after

They had both made it. Yabu made it. Ai made it. Both their dreams became a reality.

“Hahahaha! That’s so funny!” Ai laughed out loud. Everyone was circling around Yabu’s bed. They were cheering for his and Ai’s success. They were being so noisy the nurses couldn’t stop coming into Yabu’s ward to tell them to be quite. When everyone had left, only Ai stayed with Yabu. They were holding hands, talking to each other like an old couple talking about their younger days.

Ring…Ring…Ring…

“Oh, that’s mine!” Ai was startled by her loud rock song ringtone. Yabu gripped Ai’s hand strongly and whispered ‘I love you even until I die’ before he let Ai answer the phone.

“Hello………? Yea yea, that’s me. Uhuh, oh tomorrow? But I might be busy. Yes, oh wait no.”

TEET, TEET TEET, the sound of the machine keeping Yabu alive.

TEET, TEET

TEET TEET TEET TEET,

“Can I do it later?” Ai was still talking on the phone.

TEET,

“Ai…” Yabu weakly called her.

TEET, TEET,
“Ai…”

TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET.

Ai dropped her phone.

It smashed onto the floor.

She didn’t want to turn around. The sound she was hearing…it wasn’t true…was it? But then the doctor and nurse came barging in Yabu’s ward. It was true then. She kneeled on the floor. Tears streaming down as quickly as they can. She still hadn’t turn around. She couldn’t turn and stare into the eyes of the lifeless Yabu…

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

It was a wet morning, the morning dew could clearly be seen from inside. Ai sat near the windowsill staring blankly ahead. She was combing her long silky hair.

"Ai-nee?"

Her little brother peeked inside her bedroom. "Yes?"

"Breakfast is ready!"

"I'll be right down ok?"

Her brother scurried off down the stairs. But she heard his footsteps climbing the stairs again.

"Ohh nee-chan?"
"What?"
"Mommy said she found that star pendant you were looking for. Its a bit rusty. Mommy asks if you still wanna keep it"

"Yes! Please!"
"Umm. Ok"

Ai look in the mirror and grinned at herself. It had been 3 years since he passed away, but she couldn't help wish she had kept her hair longer back then. "Yabu might have liked it" She whispered to herself. And the image of his smile, his brown hair that sometimes covered his eye, his perfect jawline, his voice...she could never forget. The memories they shared...she would never forget. Even though he can't and never will be able to sit next to her anymore.
