Synagogue service

Is any of you Jewish/knows how synagogue service works? I'm writing a fic and I need to know if Kaddish is routinely read, or if you can ask for it to be included, and if so, when? Specifically, this is the first anniversary of a death of a family member (the character in question is making the effort to commemorate the occasion, but he's not

Hi! Uh, you don't know me. joannindiw sent me. And I am Jewish! But my knowledge of this is limited to just my own personal experience (reform temple, we weren't members, they asked as part of the service who was commemorating a yahrzeit). My suggestion: ask kassrachel, who is a rabbi and can thus give you a sense of the practice across all the flavors of Judaism, plus, you know, provide helpful details. If you're okay with it, I'd be happy to point her this way. (For the record, she is ridiculously nice, and is also comfortable being Rabbi to the Fans. Fear her not!)

Oh, thank you so much! My knowledge of Judaism is sadly limited to what I read in Erich Segal books and on Wikipedia. :)
