Unimportant

It was a long time that Uruha nurtured this secret little crush of his. Okay, maybe not so secret. It just wasn’t his style to hide his feelings. His deeper thoughts, maybe, making him appear shallow, insensitive at times and maybe also a bit dumb. But not his feelings.

It must have been clear to many people, at least among the small circle of close friends who knew both Uruha himself as well as the object of his desire. At least the guitarist felt the eyes of his best friend Reita on him often enough to know that at least somebody was watching his struggle. He didn’t really share his secret in words to him either. It just didn’t seem right. Not because he fell in love with a guy, that much was not a real surprise.

But out of all people it had to be Ruki. Yes, Ruki, little vocalist and macho, loved and lusted after by so many people that even Uruha had to doubt himself. Problem was just that the signals coming from Ruki were confusing Uruha so much it hurt. One time the singer would be flirting with him. The next he was just a friend again and all talks about wishing to be in a relationship with someone understanding seemed not to have been directed at Uruha at all. It was frustrating and one day the guitarist just had it.

They had shared one of those rare days with only the two of them, went shopping and had some snacks. They had even labeled this a date, all the while grinning and laughing like school boys. And when Ruki had said goodbye to him in front of his apartment, Uruha finally dared to not only pull the smaller man into an embrace.

It was a kiss. A real kiss. A smile against his lips. The kiss was returned. So was the smile that split his face. They said goodbye.

And that was it. No message for a few days, and when they saw each other again for work, none of them talked about what happened or where they would go from here. But the lack of an answer was answer enough for Uruha. It hurt, he was disappointed, but he had to take it.

It was weeks later, and after Uruha got to know Ruki was dating some girl he had met at a party. Even that he only got to know by overhearing. Once the guitarist was having a lazy evening with movies and food with his best friend, and somehow they had started listing the several quirks of the little vocalist to each other. His tongue loosened by the beers he had, Uruha was also hinting at his former crush.

“Oh, he knew you were in love with him. He said he isn’t interested.”

Those words, casually said by Reita while he grabbed another handful of popcorn, felt like a knife twisting in Uruha’s chest. He fell silent, a bitter grin finding its way onto his face. Nice to know, really nice. Alright, he was over Ruki already. But it still hurt. It took only so much for Uruha not to go get his mobile and shout at the singer. Instead he shared his story with Reita.

Several weeks later, Uruha couldn’t have been that much happier. It was almost scary that everything was going so smoothly, even regarding his relationship. Something was bound to happen, or so he thought. Alright, it wasn’t some life-changing event, but when Ruki wrote to him on his IM for the first time in weeks, it brought back some unwanted thoughts.

“It’s just a pity I was so dumb back then…,” Uruha read on the screen and quirked an eyebrow.
“Hm?” he wrote back instantly, only remembering the past happenings a second later. He bit his lip. Was Ruki really hinting at that?
“Ah, not so important. It’s too late anyway. ^_^”
Well, Uruha couldn’t find out for sure, because the singer wouldn’t spill. So Uruha let it drop.

Walking into his bedroom a bit later, his gaze fell onto the figure sleeping in his bed already. A smile tugged on his lips. “Yeah, you’re right. It’s too late and for the better. Maybe sometimes it’s good you’re so dumb,” he murmured.

The black head rose from the pillow, making a tired questioning noise. “It’s nothing. Go back to sleep, Aoi”, Uruha whispered softly. After a moment’s hesitation, he stripped down to his boxers and slipped in next to his lover, who immediately snuggled up to him. Yes, it was for the better.
