Dear Yuletide Writer,
I hope you will have fun with the assignment and have a great Yuletide experience! I included what I think the important points are in my sign-up sheet, but below you will find more information if you need it. If you have your own ideas and want to run with them, please do!
Jumong: I recently fell in love with this series for its intrigue, action, gorgeous looks, interesting historical setting, and most of all its characters and their relationships.
I found Sayong beautiful, poignant, and fascinating. I loved the careful relationship between Sayong and Hyupbo, and if you wanted to explore that further (up to a mature but not explicit rating), that would be wonderful. But I've only asked for the character Sayong because I simply want to know more. For example, a story telling me how Sayong came to be such a shrewd observer (but not infallible) and adviser would also make me very happy. Or there are all those time-jumps in the series -- what was Sayong doing for those years? Or a missing scene from an episode... Sayong presents lots of possibilities.
If you want to include any other characters (canon or original) to tell your Sayong story, please do!
If we matched on Jumong, but now you're worried about the burden of historical research/accuracy, please don't on my account. I'm perfectly happy to stay within the history as presented in the series. On the other hand, if historical research/accuracy is what sparks your creativity, don't hold back! :) Whatever you want to include, I'll appreciate it.
* Jumong is available on DVD and through backchannels (I think). Looks like there are some clips on YouTube (if they're not all fanvids). FWIW, I have the YesAsia DVD set and am used to the romanization they used in their subtitles, but please use the romanized spellings you like best.
Sungkyunkwan Scandal: I loved this series for the plot, the drama, and the charismatic main characters. Jaeshin and Yongha stole my heart, individually and together. :)
Jaeshin and Yongha slash (of any rating) would make me happiest, but if you'd rather stay with camaraderie or bromance, that's equally fine. I love how they know and understand each other beneath their facades, and a story showing me something of that would be great. There are also possibilities for missing scenes, or an action plot, or they solve a problem/mystery together.
For the question of historical accuracy, I'm happy to stay within the history presented in the series, but if you enjoy historical research, go for it. FWIW, I'm not familiar with the book version.
* Sungkyunkwan Scandal is available on DVD and through K-drama backchannels. There are some clips on YouTube. I watched it on KBS World and am used to the romanization they used in their subtitles, but please use the romanized spellings you like best.
Shinhwa RPF: I love them all! Gorgeous, great, crazy, adorkable Shinhwa. I love Dongwan's honesty, Minwoo's caring and intensity, Junjin's energy and boyishness, and Hyesung's humor/snark. Anything set within the K-pop world of Shinhwa, or an AU based on one of their music videos, would be awesome. Friendship and/or bromance would be fine, but if slash (of any rating, up to or including a foursome) inspires you, that would be a welcome tasty treat. Any pairings work for me. And if it just doesn't seem like Shinhwa without Eric and Andy, bring them along. :) Story prompt possibilities: a reunion after Junjin's release from military dury; mishaps and hijinks from their dorm-living days; MBC Guerrilla Concert backstory; road trip; or a simple night out on the town. I figure this is my longshot request, so anything with Shinhwa would make me dizzy with happiness. (And if you prefer different spellings of their names, please use the spellings you like best.)
* Shinhwa clips come and go on YouTube, but there's usually a pretty good selection available, though they may not be subtitled, if that's a concern.
Doctrine of Labyrinths - Sarah Monette: For me, these fascinating, rich, spellbinding books were a delicious blend of fantasy with Victorian novel, filled with compelling characters. I loved the scenes of Kay and Mildmay together; adding Felix to the mix put (as always) an interesting spin on everything. I'd love a "what happens next" story about life in Grimglass (bonus love if you mention what's become of poor Julian Carey), or a slice-of-life in Esmer, or a perilous journey through Corambis or Caloxa. Relationship-wise: for these three, anything goes, including staying within the canon-defined parameters.
* The 4-book series is available from various booksellers, including Amazon Kindle. My request is inspired by the last book, Corambis.
Most of all, I hope you enjoy writing the story and find Yuletide as exciting, satisfying, and fun as I do!
