I AM A VERY CRITICAL FAN
AHEM.
So, ep. 1 of Tales of the LolbyssAbyss anime is out. since I'm super lazy, the first part (as well as ending song for download) are in pkgaming's journal HERE
Okay, so, here's my very critical key point summaries:
- Average animation is average. To be expected of a 26 ep. series as opposed to the very pretty OVAs some of the other Tales of games got. Opening animation was pretty but too much overly-enthusiastic/generic posing and not even as good as the game intro 8C
- YULIA zoooomfwooshtalkingsparkly hey I SPY A PEONY
- delicious voices
- GUY ~♥ makes me wanna throw my cosplay on and do a dance! NICE CATCH, MAID. Also thanks for acting even gayer, dude, because you know we didn't already have suspicions or anything. (oh god look at the part where he's sitting on the bench oh geeze HEY LUKE I FOUND YOU IN THIS TREEEEE)
- canon outfits for young-versions of some of the characters! fweeee must not cosplay
- how long until there are OH EXPLOITABLE animated .gifs of Luke polishing his sword? Because I admit I laughed inwardly a little...
- oh crap Tear I've missed you and how much better you are than 90% of rpg females
- cute ending, I want the images from it!
I'll watch all of it (it'll be better with subs, of course) because I'm a fangoob and the animes always add some depth to the character personalities and fun bits to some memorable scenes(something that I love the games for in the first place), but if you're not an Abyss fan you'd probably just get bored. I give it a B.
Aaand last night JakeandJules invited me to come over and partake in the playing of Silent Hill 5: Homecoming....
so here goes my rant regarding that, too:
- I like Alex, he's got more emotion than I'm used to, reminds me of Heather in that sense...
- Environments are great! suitably creepy, the ambience is up to snuff, the transition to "Otherworld" is neato. They definitely put most of the work into the areas as opposed to the characters.
- controls are shit. Like, before you forgave it because it added to the scare-factor, you could justify it saying "oh you're an average Joe! of course aiming isn't easy!" But Jake was cursing up a storm at these controls. It was frustrating like holding a controller covered in butter! When you're stuck in a narrow hallway with multiple intelligent monsters, solid controls are kindof important.
- goddamnit WHY IS THERE SO MUCH OF THE MOVIE IN THIS GAME UGHHH GEEEEZE
- I found out about this when the guides first came in at work, but really, the "Bogeyman"? Poor Peehead, we liked you better when you were subtle. I mean, you could say "Bogey" is a war terminology reference, but seriously, if there's anything this studio shouldn't get too bold with, it's something as iconic as Pyramid Head.
- Why do all the NPCs look really crummy? Like, really really bad. Alex is so fluid and textured, but everyone else looks painted-on and robotic. Majorly underwhelmed.
- Plot seems good! And there's multiple endings, alternate costumes, etc. I want to learn more about the characters, which is more than I could say for the leads in SH4, so yay!
- little brother is a prick.
Sooo I would say Homecoming's doing its job but you kindof have to work around the kinks to enjoy it, I guess.... I'd probably give it a B, too.
SO yeah, I'm harsh on some things because I'm a fan but I'm also forgiving others. Goes both ways.
Next post I'll probably discuss fun Final Fantasy concert and the very dire topic of which cons I'll be going to in the coming year and the respective cosplays that go with. Same Moog time, same Moog channel!
