2. Flashback/Free-pass
“Look!” Aoi exclaimed as he flaunted a piece of thick-gold-paper in his hands to his best friend. Aoi was still twenty-three year old back then.
“Waaa...” Kai was dazzled as he stretched out his hand to reach the thick-gold-paper.
“Nope!” Aoi held the thick-gold-paper off of Kai’s reach. “You can’t borrow it!”
“I just want to see,” Kai denied it.
Aoi giggled. “Well, who knew that I’m that lucky to get the backstage free-pass? I’m going to meet the Papillon Reel’s members! All of them!” Aoi exclaimed it again as he looked at the ‘free-pass to Papillon Reel’s backstage’ written elegantly on the thick-gold-paper’s surface in his hands.
“Hey, don’t forget about your promise. I want Shinya’s signature.”
“Don’t worry!” Aoi said as he patted Kai’s shoulder. “I’ll get their signatures.”
“All of them?”
“Yup!”
“Every single of the members?”
“Yup!”
“Including Kaoru?”
“Y-” Aoi stopped his own word. He lowered his gaze. Slowly, he scratched his head, hesitated. “I... I’ll try...”
“Phah! Where did all of your spirit go!? Don’t be like that! It won’t be incomplete if you can’t get even just one signature!”
“But, Kai-” Aoi held both of Kai’s shoulder. “-you knew it, didn't you? The name they used to call Kaoru? The Evil Leader...” Aoi said as he put on his dreamy gaze, as he was making the ‘evil’ image in the sky. “He’s fierce, Kai!”
“Toshiya was the only one who ever call him with that name. Moreover, Kaoru would only act like that to his band mates. I think he wouldn't be that fierce in front of his fans.”
“Who knows!?” Aoi still tried to defend his opinion. He then came near Kai and whispered something. “I think you know it, Kai. Those fangirls. Kaoru might hate them.”
“Oh, so now YOU’re a fangirl?”
“No, I’m not! Not me!” Aoi said in disagreement as he slapped Kai’s shoulder hard. “I’m just scared that Kaoru will see that all of his fans have the same behavior.”
“Is Kaoru that stupid?”
“No!!” Aoi said as he slapped Kai’s shoulder again, this time, was harder than before. “Kaoru is not stupid, Kai! You better take back your words if you don’t want something bad happen to you!” Aoi showed his small fist.
Kai looked at Aoi skeptically and took a hold of his friend’s fist. “Then you shouldn't be too worried about it! He’s not that stupid to compare you with those fangirls, right?”
“Haaa… yeah… you’re right…”
“That’s why; you have to take this chance as good as possible! It’s very rare they would give a free-pass to their fans. And you got the free-pass!” This time, Kai was the one who slapped Aoi’s shoulder hard.
“Hey! You don’t have to slap it that hard!” Aoi protested as he touched his own shoulder.
“Like you didn't do it anyway!” Kai said in returned. Aoi just had to laugh at that.
Kai looked at his watch and reminded about the meeting time with the Papillon Reel’s members. Kai then accompanied Aoi to the backstage entrance. After that, only the person with a free-pass was able to get through the door. There were two men - from their big bodies, Aoi and Kai could immediately identify them as the bodyguards.
“I can only accompany you to this point,” Kai said with a smiled.
Aoi just nodded at the words. Aoi hold the free-pass paper in his hand, in front of his chest, in a strong grip. He looked at those bodyguards as he showed the gold-thick-paper in his hand. One of the bodyguards brought his face close to the gold-thick-paper that Aoi had in his hand and read all the things that written on it.
“OK, you can go in,” said the bodyguard.
Aoi turned his head and looked at Kai. Kai made a gesture by doubled his fist and mouthed ‘ganbatte’ to Aoi. Aoi nodded at that and he tried so hard to gather all of his courage to smile.
Yes, Aoi felt that he really needed to gather all of his courage. He was nervous. So, very, nervous. That was the first time for him to be able to meet with the Papillon Reel’s members in a very close distance.
Papillon Reel was a rock indie band that Aoi loved so much. The band had five members and each of them had their own charisma. But, among those five men, there was just one person that stole Aoi’s attention the most. He was Kaoru, one of Papillon Reel’s guitarists. Because of that person too Aoi started to learn to play guitar.
Aoi had every Papillon’s singles and albums. He even collected their DVDs too. He came to almost every concert they had held. Aoi never missed the one that held in his town, and he even sometimes went to the nearest towns’ concerts with Kai too.
All of this times, Aoi was just ever saw them live onstage. Even when he got the closest part to the stage, there was still some gap that separated him from Kaoru and the other members. That’s why, that day would be the day that Aoi would never forget.
Aoi didn't even reach Papillon Reel’s room when he had to stop his step. Of course Aoi couldn't continue to walk when he saw the figure, one of Papillon Reel’s members, stood right in front of him with a very close distance.
The thing that made Aoi felt relieved was the person he met. It was not Kaoru. The one who stood before him was Kyo, Papillon Reel’s vocalist. One thing that Aoi thought that time, he didn't expect that Kyo would be that… not tall. The makeup that Kyo had on his face really DID make his face looked scary. But the height made the scary image in Aoi’s mind changed. That time, Kyo looked so… cute.
Meanwhile, Kyo, who started to aware of Aoi’s presence, stopped his conversation with someone who Aoi had never seen him before. Kyo turned his head and looked at Aoi. It startled Aoi to see the vocalist was looking at him like that.
“Who are you?” Kyo asked.
Aoi didn't have the time to answer the question. The person who talked to Kyo earlier clapped his hands as he said, “Ah! The free-pass holder!” He then pointed toward the gold-thick-paper in Aoi’s hand.
“Heee?” Kyo approached Aoi to see the gold-thick-paper in Aoi’s hand. “Wow! You’re right! So you’re the lucky person? Come here!” Kyo invited Aoi as he grabbed Aoi’s wrist.
“EH!?” Aoi never expected the Papillon Reel’s vocalist would actually holding his hand like that and it made Aoi panic.
“Don’t be shy! Come on!” Kyo said cheerfully as he kept pulling Aoi, made the young man couldn't do anything other than following the vocalist.
At the front of a door with ‘Papillon Reel’ written on a piece of paper that stuck on it, Kyo stopped. Behind him, Aoi also stopped his step. Aoi’s heart beat faster. He was getting more nervous when he read the name on the door. Aoi almost got his heart stopped beating when suddenly Kyo opened the door and greeted all the people in the room.
“Hey! Look who’s here!” Kyo shouted as he let go of Aoi’s hand. He shifted a little from his previous position and made Aoi lost anything that could cover him from the Papillon Reel’s members who were looking at him at that moment.
“Kyo, you know you don’t have to actually move. We could still see him even when you stood in front of him anyway,” said someone with a red hair.
“Shut up, Die! I’m not that short!” Kyo said crossed that only answered with a laugh from the red-haired guy.
“By the way, who is he, Kyo?” asked the other. When Aoi looked at the one who asked, Aoi saw the beautiful bassist. The first time Aoi saw the bassist in a promotional video, Aoi thought that the bassist was a girl. But when Aoi saw the bassist onstage, in one of their lives, Aoi was sure that the bassist was really male.
“Look at this!” Kyo said as he pulled Aoi’s hand that hold the gold-thick-paper. Kyo showed it to the rest of his mates.
“Oh? The free-pass holder, I see,” Dai said as he approached Aoi. He surprised Aoi by touching Aoi’s chin and looking at Aoi’s face closely. “Cute.”
“Hey!” Kyo shouted and kicked Die’s foot. “Don’t tease him, Die!” Kyo shouted again and the red-haired guy laughed again. “Oh! What’s your name?” Kyo asked.
It made Aoi came to realize. “Oh! I… I’m sorry! I haven’t introduced myself yet,” Aoi said, panic. “I… I’m Aoi. I’m a big fan of Papillon Reel! It’s really great to see you guys!” Aoi said as he bowed.
“Wow…” the bassist responded. “Very well-mannered.” He smiled. “I bet you already know us, right? But I’ll introduce myself anyway. And this time, I’ll do it just for you,” the beautiful bassist chuckled. “I’m Toshiya, on bass.”
“Die, guitarist,” said the tall red-haired guy.
“I’m Kyo, vocalist,” Kyo said. Then he pointed toward a thin guy who sat on a sofa in the room. The thin guy was playing with his sticks. “That one is Shinya, the drummer,” Kyo said, and Shinya waved his hand to Aoi. Kyo laughed. “He’s not very chatty. But you don’t have to be scared, Aoi-chan. He’s friendly.”
Toshiya clicked his tongue. “You’re referring to the wrong person, Kyo. Shinya IS not very chatty. But he’s not the one that Aoi should be scared of.”
“Eeh..!?” Aoi was very surprised with the words.
Toshiya then approached Aoi and said, “The one you should afraid of is Kaoru.”
“Don’t spread false news, Toshiya!” Kyo said as he laughed.
“But that’s the truth, right?” Toshiya protested. “That mad Evil Leader almost ate one of the interviewers at our last interview yesterday!”
There, a voice was heard and made the beautiful bassist felt eerie. “Don’t exaggerate things, Tocchi…”
The voice made the beautiful bassist closed his mouth. He turned his head back to Aoi and said, “There! You heard that, didn't you? It’s just the voice, and you didn't even see where he was… but you can feel his killing aura is so very strong, right?”
“I can still hear you, Tocchi…” said the voice again.
Kyo laughed again. He then patted Aoi’s shoulder. “By the way, that was Kaoru, the guitarist other than Die. We’re Papillon Reel. Nice to meet you, Aoi-chan.”
Aoi smiled. He didn't expect that the people he admired so much were so friendly toward him. Aoi then was reminded of the thing he discussed with Kai earlier. Aoi opened his bag; he took a marker and a sketchbook from inside it.
“Mm… excuse me…” Aoi called.
“Yes?” Kyo answered.
“Is… is it possible for you guys to sign this?” Aoi asked as he showed his sketchbook. “I… I know that this was prohibited. I… I know I've shouldn't ask for this… but…” Aoi lowered his gaze and he closed his eyes. He was so nervous there. That moment, he felt so impolite by asking like that. He just remembered what Kai had told him: if he didn't have the courage to start it, he might lose the rare chance. That’s why Aoi kept encouraging himself and asked the Papillon Reel’s signatures.
“Hey, why not?!” Kyo said cheerfully as he took the marker and the sketchbook from Aoi’s hand. He brought the sketchbook to the coffee table in front of Shinya and opened the first page. “This is my page!” Kyo exclaimed as he signed the whole page with a big signature. He was so cheerful that moment. Actually, Aoi didn't really know whether the vocalist was really that cheerful or not for the scary makeup. But from the hum that Kyo voiced out while he signed Aoi’s sketchbook, Aoi knew that the vocalist was a cheerful type of person. “Hey, Shinya! Since you’re the closest person, here, you’re next!” Kyo said as he tossed the marker to Shinya.
Shinya caught the marker efficiently. Kyo then pushed the sketchbook toward Shinya. Shinya opened the next page. But before he signed the paper, Aoi stopped him.
“Ah, Shinya-san, mm, can you please write ‘for Kai’?”
“Who’s ‘Kai’?” Kyo asked.
“He… he’s a friend of mine. He’s Shinya-san’s fan,” Aoi explained.
“Oh, I see…” Kyo said slowly. “Hey, Toshiya! Die! Sign this! Come on!” Kyo asked. While waiting for the two to signed Aoi’s sketchbook, Kyo asked, “So, what about you? Who do you like most in Papillon Reel?”
“Eh!? Oh, mm… it’s… mm…” Aoi bent down in effort to hide his face.
“Hey, look! He blushed!” Kyo said cheerfully. “Come on, Aoi-chan! Say it, say it! I want to know!”
“W-well… I… I like all of you… but… one person who has the biggest charisma for me is… mm…” Aoi said nervously. “K-Kaoru-san…”
“Haaa!?” Kyo, Toshiya and Die said in unison. Shinya even looked at Aoi too with his disbelieve gaze.
“Hey, you heard that?” Toshiya asked. “Our Evil Leader has a fan!”
“Tocchi…” called the voice again.
“Oh, OK! Fine! I’ll shut my mouth!” said Toshiya before he covered his mouth with both of his hands.
“E… excuse me… Toshiya-san,” Aoi called.
“Yes?” the beautiful bassist answered.
Aoi lowered his voice. He didn't want the person he mentioned heard his words. “Is it true that Kaoru-san was as fierce as you said? I… I mean, I know about the ‘Evil Leader’ name too, from one of your interviews in the magazine. And about the last interviews yesterday… I heard that, one of the interviewers was ended speechless when he faced Kaoru-san. Was it true?”
“Yes, you’re right!” Toshiya said as he approached Aoi. His gesture showed that he intended to whisper to Aoi, but Toshiya didn’t even lower his voice. “Like I told you before, he almost ate the interviewer.”
“Tocchi,” the voice called again. “When will you stop talking?”
“I’m just answering this boy’s question!” Toshiya tried to defend himself as he laughed and scratched his head.
“O-oh, th-then, c-can you help me, please? Please ask Kaoru-san to sign my sketchbook?”
“It will be better if we ask him to come here, right?” Kyo said.
“Eeh!?” Aoi was panic again.
“Hey, Kaoru! Stop making us hear your voice only! You got your biggest fan here!” Kyo called him.
“Oh, OK. Wait for a moment…” said the voice.
Aoi was frozen when he waited for his favorite guitarist to come. Not long after that, from behind the partition that Aoi saw inside the room, Papillon Reel’s guitarist who was always let his voice only be heard, showed his figure at last. The figure was the one that made Aoi followed each of Papillon Reel’s progress. Aoi saw the figure that walked toward him. It was the same purple hair he saw in their last promotional video. It was the same black costume in the PV too. What Aoi loved the most was, it was the same arrogant impression he got from every live he attended.
“Welcome, Kaoru-sama,” Toshiya said as he bowed to the said guitarist.
“I said; don’t exaggerate things, Tocchi…” Kaoru said.
It was the same voice. It WAS Kaoru. The voice Aoi heard from before was really Kaoru’s. The figure that Aoi saw before him that moment was also the same figure that all this time he could only see onstage. Aoi didn't believe that THAT moment he was just few steps from the person he admired the most in his life.
“Kao, come here!” Kyo invited him as he grabbed Kaoru’s wrist and pulled Kaoru approached Aoi. “This is Aoi-chan,” Kyo explained. “He’s your biggest fan! He’s also-” Kyo suddenly stopped his words. “Eh..??”
All eyes were on the room’s entrance door. Aoi, who should be stood in front of Kaoru, was nowhere to be seen. He was gone, he dashed out of the room and no one knew where Aoi was.
“Tocchi,” Kaoru called. “Look what you've done.”
“What? What have I done?” Toshiya asked, didn't understand with Kaoru’s words.
“You made the kid accumulated that ‘evil aura’ of yours about me in his mind.”
“Huh..?? I was just joking,” Toshiya said in disagreement.
Kyo laughed. “But you were so serious back then. I can’t blame that kid for believing you that much!”
“By the way…” Die said suddenly.
“What?” Kaoru asked.
Die just pointed toward the sketchbook and the marker that were still sprawled on the table in front of Shinya.
“Ah, he forgot about his sketchbook…” Kyo said. “Guess we have to entrust it to this place’s staff.”
“No. I’ll take it.”
“Uh… are you sure, Kaoru?” Kyo asked.
“Yeah. He’ll be back,” Kaoru said as he turned around.
“Wha… what makes you so sure?” Toshiya asked.
“I don’t know. I just have the feeling…” Kaoru smiled. He then disappeared again to the back of the partition where he appeared before.
((..to be continued..))

A/N: this was the beginning of the flashback. Here, Aoi was stil 23 year old and Kaoru was 28.
Mm… since this will be so much different from the real condition, I didn't use ‘Dir en Grey’ as the name of their band… is that ok? ><
So, this is the intro. This was where Aoi’s story started. After this, Aoi will meet with the Papillon Reel’s members again, and it will change Aoi’s life for good.
I’ll do my best in writing this. ><
As usual, critics and comments are so much love!
