I consider myself the ultimate shipper, but two of my all-time favorite Castle eps are decidedly non-shippy. One is
Esposito backstory, and I've already written about it. The other is Ryan backstory, "The Wild Rover" that aired this week.
Oh, my goodness, I loved this ep. Ryan is such a quiet guy, often seeming to stay in Espo's shadow. I knew he was loyal to the core ("Den of Thieves" highlighted it beautifully, as have many other episodes). But he really got to shine in this ep. He may not brag or show off like Espo does at times, but man has he got the goods!
I don't even know where to start when it comes to listing all the reasons I think this ep was brilliant. One was the relationship with Siobhan. The actors did a fabulous job of having that chemistry simmer just below the surface. You could tell these characters had a past with each other. Ryan obviously had loved her, and as one fan said, she wasn't really "the one who got away"--she was the one he'd been forced to leave behind. There was never any doubt that Ryan loves his wife and would remain faithful to her, but he so clearly felt strongly for Siobhan as well and was going to do anything and everything to keep her safe and get her out of her horrible situation. It could have been cheap or cheesy, but it was so beautifully done. Big kudos for that.
And the scene at the end! Sure, parts of it were played for laughs, but that was kind of a relief after the tenseness of it all. But I loved Ryan's absolute confidence that his team was there, and I loved him telling the baddies "Don't mess with them. Really, just don't."
The last scene with Siobhan when all the dust had cleared was lovely and poignant and good closure for them both, I think. I teared up a bit.
I'll admit the the "tie it up with a big pretty bow" scene at the end between Ryan and his wife may have bee a bit over-the-top in the cheesy department, but you know what? I don't care. I loved it anyway. So sweet. And confirmation that Ryan was now definitely moving forward in his life--no more looking back.
All in all, an excellent episode. Big happy sigh.
And Doctor Who returns Saturday! WOOT!
