Mini Playlist #1 Creepy Hotel

First, I LOVE music. (SURPRISE!)

Second, I have been meaning to make these posts for a while, but haven't because, well... they will primarily consist of linking to YouTube videos when I can find them, and then rambling about popular music like I know what I'm talking about. However, it's not as if I've been posting much of anything else for a while, so, in lieu of actual content...

There are certain songs that remind me so much of other songs that when I hear one of them, I always think of the other(s). Sometimes this connection is based on what the songs are about, other times, it's a similarity of sound, or the feelings they evoke.

This IS just an excuse to list 2-5 songs I rather like at the same time, but if you have favorite songs that fit the theme, I would LOVE for you to link or mention them in my comments thread. I enjoy finding new music (yes, to buy).

IF you like the songs I list here, I recommend buying them as well. I'd give you links, but you know where to find music, and I trust that you have your favorites places to buy. There are the obvious online stores, or you might still have an actual music store still lurking around the place you live. Or, you already own these songs, so whatever.

Without further noodling,

MINI PLAYLIST #1
Creepy Hotels.

Although some of these playlists will just be songs that remind me of other songs, in this case, they are songs that remind me of The Shining. In the case of The Eagles - Hotel California, it's all the due to the song itself. For 30 Seconds to Mars - The Kill, the connection comes in through the music video, which is an obvious homage. One thing that I like about both songs is that they either tell or hint at stories.

I'm starting with THIS list (even though it is only two songs long!) because the 30 Seconds to Mars video is a much-needed Unicorn Chaser for me, after being traumatized by Requiem for a Dream last night.

I've always loved this song, it is a classic of classic rock blah blah blah. Anyway. Favorite lyrics are "They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast." It's really hard for me to dissect why this song is awesome because a) the song doesn't need it and b) I grew up with it.

In any case, I think what makes the song so creepy to me is that with the exception of a few chords, the solos and background instruments don't really sound creepy so much as vaguely upbeat. The song could easily be much more cheerful. Sticking that background with lyrics about being trapped somehow makes the song claustrophobic. I feel like I'm caged by the drumbeat and bass until the guitar solo runs for the door. (PS If I'm wrong wrong wrong and there is no bass in this song, I will be sad at myself forever.)

I like the song, but I honestly first heard it when I noticed the music video was pre-loaded on my Zune. I like the video for many reasons, the most shallow of which is that I could look at Jared Leto for hours. Shut up! I have my weaknesses! If he wasn't so hot even as a junkie, I never would have finished watching Requiem.

That being said, this is one of my favorite music videos. It's cut really well, and it fits the song. I like the Kubrick homage much better than some of the band's other videos, the video for From Yesterday struck me as a bit too indulgent for what we got out of it. Plus, okay, yes. I really like the Jared Leto screaming at himself in the hallway part. I prefer music videos that are both promo for the song (their original purpose), which this one succeeds at, and that either show the band being awesome, or put some neat visuals with the song. This one does all three.

Plus, it has re-watch value for me, which is good.

I'm going to gauge interest in these posts before I continue. So, if you have a feeling either way about whether not you care about my music tastes, go ahead and let me know.

More importantly, are there any songs YOU like that remind you of creepy hotels?
