Since Friday night until the late afternoon of Saturday, the rain was strong and continuous. Our area became flooded, a rare thing. And then the creek in front of our house became swollen and rose above the walls where it was contained. The floods rose to water levels I have never seen before, entering our elevated house and submerging two of our vehicles parked in the garage. The two SUVs are now out of commission until my dad can have the two vehicles towed and taken apart (even the engines) to be cleaned of mud and water.
Our family was frightened that the water might enter our house. We were lucky it didn't. The garage (situated on ground level) took the brunt of the water, leaving the first floor of our house safe. We had no electricity so we had to make do with canned food. It was a good thing that our stove was a gas range. We cooked rice and heated the food there, and we brought out candles on tin trays so we could see in the dark. The only advantage of heavy rains was that the ground and air was cool, so even though we had no aircon, we were OK.
The flood waters in our area drained fast. An hour after the rains weakened to a shower, our streets could already be passable--slippery with a thick coat of mud--but passable. Other areas were not so lucky. One day later, floods in Marikina, Rizal, Cainta and Pasig and selected parts of Manila were still high. Classes were postponed until Tuesday because there were a lot of debris and cars piled on top of each other after the floods subsided.
In all my life I have never seen a disaster this great of magnitude. The elders said this was the worst storm they had seen in 20 years. I hope this does not happen again.
