I was thinking today about symbolism used in film, and came upon the zombie subject. It's pretty well known what the old shambling zombie symbolizes, fear of losing your individuality, become one of the masses etc. Or possibly an uprising of the weak, unwashed masses overtaking the upper class.
Well with the recent surge of movies with fast zombies like 28 days later, I was thinking what is the symbolism behind it if any? It seems to me that any idea that prolific like the fast zombies usually comes from some kind of subconscious resonance in our minds, so is there a symbolism here? The first thing that comes to mind is a reversal of roles of the standard zombie flick. This time the zombies are more powerful, stronger and faster than us, and the powerful are preying upon the weak.
But then it conflicts with the zombie theme of there always being so many of them, and so few humans left in the apocalypse scenario. Maybe I'm looking too far into it and it's just Hollywood changing the zombie theme to match todays standards of less subtle horror and more horrendous and visceral carnage?
I'm curious for some opinions here, help me out guys!
