“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Those very words were written by our founding fathers; what good is it to have any other right but the ability to pursue happiness where ever that might be? Marriage is a sacred commitment of two people joining their separate lives into one life, to be happy with one another. If this is true, why does the government feel the need to take this right away from certain individuals, by passing an amendment that will not allow them to get married and show their love and devotion towards one another? The battle for legalizing same-sex marriages has sparked an uproar in society today.
A blessing in this country, that not many other countries have, is a persons right to pursue happiness, that is something so special that no one should take that away. If the government has the capability to take this right away from homosexuals, then what will stop the government from taking away any of our other rights, that so many men and women have died for trying to defend? Americans are blessed with the opportunity to go from being poor when they are children, to becoming rich as an adult, this is pursuing your very right to be happy. Why must homosexuals suffer, and not be able to pursue this very right to get married?
Same-sex marriages have been a big thing in the gay community for years now, but what dawned the issue of an amendment being passed, was the city of San Francisco, distributed marriage licenses to same-sex couples. President George W. Bush said that San Francisco, was to stop because it was unethical.
The reason why it was not ethical was because it went against his particular faith, but this country is made up of more than one religion, so he can not make a decision on ethics, his ethics are different from all Americans. Along time ago this great nation of ours decided that government and religion should be and remain separate, why combine them now and neglect someone their natural born right.
Belgium and the Netherlands have already taken a step to giving the right to marry who ever you want in their country, Canada is not to far behind. Through out history people where homosexuals, they were just in the closet about it because it was not accepted back then as it is now. A great writer by the name of William Shakespeare was reportedly bisexual, that just proves even the best people were not straight. Some people believe that people became homosexual over night one day, but they did not, the only reason that no one knows about this is because it was never written down in a book that a great person was gay. When will our Congress that this is the United States of America and people come here to be able to be free from persecution in their own county, if we turn our back now on this issue people will start to think that this country is not the land of the free after all.
More than ten score years ago men and women joined to gather to fight for the freedom of American citizen, to set them free of persecution. Now we are in another fight for freedom, the freedom for anyone to marry who they want weather or not that person is of the same sex. Our Declaration of Independence gave us a right to be happy, why are so many people being shunned of this right. This is not a situation that should be left to religious and moral rights, but it should be left to a person to marry whom ever they want. Countries are already leading the way in the race on making same-sex marriage, America should join in. There should be a new amendment added but it is not to ban same-sex marriage but to legalize them.
