Break was really, really good. I bummed around town with my parents, fed a lot of ducks on an almost-daily basis, went for lots of walks in the woods, and watched deer.
Thanksgiving at David's house wasn't too bad. His parents were on their best behavior because there was another non-family guest present, which meant that they didn't insult me to my face too much. I realize now that since I've come to college and eaten at Saga on a regular basis, my standards for liking meals have gone down quite a bit, because everything at David's parents' Thanksgiving dinner tasted pretty good. (The last time I had a Thanksgiving meal with his family was two years ago, and everything seemed just about inedible that time.)
After we left his house, we went to my house for our Thanksgiving dinner, and that's always good. We had our glorious you-wouldn't-believe-it's-vegan meal, went for a walk in the beautiful frostiness outside, and came back and played scrabble with David and my mom. I creamed them both for the sole reason that I got all the consonants and they got all the vowels.
I love how my parents' house has become sort of a haven, a solid place where I feel safe and relatively happy. It never felt like that until I left for Earlham. I probably wouldn't feel that way about home if I had just moved out into my own apartment, where I could feel fairly grounded. I don't want to gripe about living in a dorm room, but it just feels so very temporary. Not like home.
But no matter what, I'll be back there in time for my birthday! That makes me happy.
