[Voice;]

Ok since we now know about different universes, I want to hear people's ideas on what's going on in their own alternate universe. Cos, hey, it could- [Voice has gone a bit deeper and he coughs] it could exist! And what if we looked different too? Like blue hair, or there could even be a girl version of you out there! Man, this is hurting ( Read more... )

[Oh god, she's still crying and he's about to make it worse. He isn't sure whether to tell her now. But he can't not tell her, after saying he would.]

In the future, in ten years, something like that, something happens to the Uchiha clan. One of my cousins, he, well- [There isn't an easy way to say this; he talks down to his hands, picking at an old scar on his thumb.] He kills everyone. In one night. Except for Sasuke, Naruto and Sakura's teammate. Thirteen years old and he wipes out our strongest fighters. I don't know how he does it, didn't ask for details, you know?

[He looks at her with resolve, hoping she'll be comforted by his determination. He believes every word he says.]

That's what I have to change. I think that's why I was brought here. So I could find out about the massacre and stop it.

[He's leaving things out, because it's too much to take in all at once. The Sasuke mess can be left until another day, or she might find out from someone else. And he's also leaving out how he thinks he might die in this massacre. When he met Itachi briefly in the City, he could sense how strong his cousin was. If facing death, he could put up a hell of a fight, but ultimately, Obito knows he isn't a match for his own family members. And could he even go full strength against his own flesh and blood? The future is fucked up.]

[She's not sure what she thought he was going to say, but she was definitely not prepared for something like this. She stares at him wildly, tears dripping down her cheeks.
So in a way he knows he's going to die... And he's alright, he can bear it. Just like he does - did - will do when...
It's too confusing. So she just smiles through the tears.]
M-maybe you can change the future.

[And lower, because it's the truth and he deserves to hear it:]
If anyone can change the future, it's probably you, Obito-kun.

[He's frightened and confused about what the hell he's supposed to do when he gets there, but hearing her say that somehow makes it all ok. He smiles back at her, a thank you.]

Please don't cry, Rin.

[Then it's quiet and he doesn't want it to be sad and painful any more. He general fix-all is to keep talking, so that's what he does. He hopes his nonsense will keep her mind off things, even if it's only for a short time.]

Hey, do you think there's another universe where I wear a mask over my face and I'm the big hot-shot? And Kakashi wears goggles and keeps messing stuff up? That'd be pretty funny, huh?

[She recognises his diversionary tactics for what they are, but she doesn't mind. One thing she likes about Obito is that it's very hard to be sad around him for very long. You can be exasperated with him, frustrated, and laugh until your stomach hurt, but you just can't stay down because he won't. So she laughs at the thought of Kakashi in goggles, because that. Is just wrong.]
And you keep reminding him of Shinobi Rule 34 and sleep in your mask as well.

Reply

action; i know why you picked 34 keepinganeyeout June 23 2009, 19:00:15 UTC
[This was better, anything was better than seeing her upset. Though he hoped she wouldn't ask him what Rule 34 was because he had no idea. Probably something stupid like a shinobi should always eat their vegetables.]

And you're not a medic nin, what's the opposite of that? Like, you could be a weapons specialist, all about destroying the opponent instead of putting your comrades back together! I don't think our team would be half as good without you.

[That...that had just slipped out and sounded more heartfelt than he'd meant to.]

Cos who doesn't love medic nins, right?

[Goddamnit, he'd been trying to laugh it off and he'd used the word love. He decided his plant from Fai-chan needed watering, right that second. He walked over to the windowsill so she wouldn't see him blushing.]

[His voice had cracked on the last sentence, and she was glad that he turned his back so he didn't see the blush that spread across her face.
She looked down and fidgeted with a hole in the bedspread.
Maybe this whole business of him liking her and her knowing it but not really returning it, not-that-she-didn't-like-him-but-not-in-that-way-you-know?, would be easier if she sat him down and talked about it with him.

And then again, very probably not.
Time for Plan B, which was diversionary tactics.]
Thanks.
So... What do you think sensei would be like? In another world? Maybe he'd be a woman!

action; I can believe you did it naturally XD keepinganeyeout June 23 2009, 22:52:23 UTC
[Thank god for diversionary tactics, and thank god for his childlike nature, in that what she said did immediately take his mind off it. Sensei as a woman!]

That's just getting scary. Sensei with long blonde hair...and high heels! We'd still be Team Awesome though, whatever universe we were in. I mean, we're apart now, the four of us, but that hasn't stopped us.

[He poured the water over his plant from the little cup he kept next to it, adding far less than when he'd first got it. He began to pull the curtains shut as he chattered.]

Tomorrow, do you w- [And then he froze. His voice had gone deep, stupidly deep, the kind of deep that sounded stupid. The fastest solution seemed to be to stop talking, so he clammed up and shut the curtains forcefully.]

[The heavy mood eased immediately; Rin was glad that she knew Obito well enough to know just how to distract him. With Kakashi-kun it was much harder, but far from impossible.]
Maybe he'd be the medic-nin then, and I'd be logging a gigantic katana around or something!

[She was eager to take her own joke further, anxious to keep the light tone between them.
Then Obito's voice cracked again.
It was stupid that that should make her feel awkward; she knew the physical changes of puberty better than most, as a medic. She could see the tension in the way he held his shoulders.
Should she say something or not? In the end, she decided to just continue as if nothing had happened.]

Yes? What about tomorrow?

action; now that's the impossible bit keepinganeyeout June 23 2009, 23:50:28 UTC
[Tired. Tired and frustrated. It was a bit much of the universe to ask him to cope with his whole family being killed and puberty. But he smiled at the giant katana comment and privately thought she'd look hot.]

It doesn't matter. I'm going to bed. Feel free to leave the light on; you know me, sleep through anything.

[He yanked off his t-shirt - now used to sleeping in his training pants - and flopped on the bed, not bothering to get in, face down on the pillow.]

Oh... Okay.
[She usually knew how to cheer Obito up when he sulked, but she wasn't sure how to go about it this time. She decided that just going to bed was maybe a good idea; she felt a bit tired and hot as it was.
A visit to the bathroom and a change of clothes later, Obito was still in the exact same position Rin left him in. She flicked off the light switch and got under the covers, lying there for a while staring at the ceiling that gradually came into focus out of the darkness.
She was never going to get any sleep with Obito next to her practically radiating misery.]

It's going to be over soon, you know. With your voice, that is.

[That right there? That would be the thing he never wants to talk about ever. He doesn't want to ignore her, but at the same time really doesn't want to talk about it, so he settles for giving a terrible snoring impersonation. Which actually sounds like how he normally snores. Whilst trying to breathe with his face in the pillow.]

[Oh boy. Alright, better give him some space then. It was bad enough that he was forced to share his room with her, even though she knew he didn't mind.
Rin fished out a spare blanket from beside the bed and carefully draped it over Obito's bare back, then turned so she faced away from him.]
Night, Obito-kun.

[He feels like a jerk, especially when she's being sweet and only trying to help. But he's emotionally drained and just wants to sleep it off.

He waits until he hears her breathing slow and whispers:]

Night, Rin.

[Thanks for being my teammate. Thanks for caring.]
