Oh! The Sweet Smell of Memories

We had some rain here today that didn't drop the temp a degree. I opened the front door to see just how hard it was raining and it steamed up my glasses.

I love the way it smells when it rains. Strange how odors bring back memories. Really been missing my grandparents this summer. Both have been gone for 30+ years but when I breath in the air during a rain shower and close my eyes I can see them just like it was yesterday. I remember shuffling my bare feet through the grass after a shower and catching the buckthorn buds between my toes. I remember riding on the fender of the tractor when grandpa and I picked peaches for market in the orchard. I remember sitting on the swing on the back porch wrapped in a scratchy old wool blanket and watching the lightening. I remember my grandma scrubbing my feet with a vegetable brush trying to get them clean. But a summer of running in your bare feet doesn't just come off.....has to wear off.

I miss them so much. I miss the house, the barn, the orchards and vineyards. All are gone but the house and it belongs to another who has renovated it beyond anything it once was. I'm tempted to go back just to look at it but it's not the same and I know I would feel as tho it has been abused rather than renovated.

I've almost no pleasant memories about living in the valley with my parents. I so looked forward to holidays and summer when I could stay with my mother's parents. "Sniff, Sniff"
