Turns out, Yunho was able to finish the documents faster than Changmin or Sunny had planned. Well, what did they expect? He’d been made to draw up, file and handle those types of files for a good four months as punishment for getting Junsu’s shiny new sports car trashed.
By accident! It was an accident!
How was he or Donghae supposed to know the spray paint had been permanent…or that it was expired and would have an acidic reaction with the car’s new paintjob?
Not that anyone cared to listen to his reasoning. The worst part? The bubbly duckbutt had laughed his ass off every time he’d come to visit, taking unnecessary, great pleasure in witnessing Yunho work with his dad’s secretary - while his friends were having parties and vacations. He hadn’t even been fazed that his birthday present had been destroyed. Apparently watching his cousin work with a sneer on his face was “totally worth the car”. Pishh! And he was supposed to be the good one of the lot. Yeah right.
Sunny had been a little confused when she’d come from her break to find all the work completed, not really sure what to do. It had taken some awkward silence and staring to get her to text Changmin on what she was supposed to do now. With nothing else particularly planned, since it would have been up to Jaejoong to do so, Changmin had dismissed him for the day, with strict orders to be on time for the morning briefing tomorrow.
Strangely, he hadn’t been all that excited to get out of the office. He couldn’t get the thought of Jaejoong out of his head.
Jaejoong on a date with a tall, beautiful girl…much like that Shirota woman.
Jaejoong, stuck in the middle of a family feud.
Jaejoong, running from the cops…
Ok that last one may have been a little stupid, but what could he do!? His brain was going into overdrive just thinking of the different possibilities of where the man could be. How Jaejoong had managed to become the main character of his thoughts, he had no idea. All he knew was that it had happened. And guilt was eating at him, taunting him with the possibility that he may have behaved like jealous five year old!
He was planning on texting Heechul, when he remembered he was out of town for some business his department had to handle with another branch. With that thought in mind, he decided to ask Siwon instead. He seemed a lot closer to Jaejoong than Heechul anyway, even if they weren’t together as often as Heechul and Jaejoong were.
He didn’t pick up.
Great. It seemed like the whole world was against him on this fine day.
It was a good time as any to go and tell his dad about his progress so far.
As he made his way outside the reception and out to the staff parking lot, his phone started ringing.
“Hello?” he answered without checking the caller name, too distracted looking for his car in the giant lot.
“Hello? Really, Jung? Is that what we’ve come to?” the person on the other end sighed dramatically.
“What do you want?” he asked nonchalantly, though a smile sprung up on his face, hearing his friend’s voice. Well, maybe the world wasn’t conspiring against him after all.
“Ouch. I’m hurt. A simple ‘Donghae! Baby, where have you been? I missed you so much! Please come, be my hero and take me away from this dungeon of restraints’ would have sufficed, you ungrateful mutt.” He teased in a freakish high-pitched voice.
“Ah-huh. Is that the voice you use to fulfil your fantasies of having me…or rather, you writhing under me? Mewling in pleasure, begging me for-” He leered into the phone, making his voice as throaty as he could, while suppressing his giggles.
“Fuck you, Jung!” came the immediate reply, with no heat behind it at all.
“Why did you call?” Yunho asked, laughing at his friend’s disinterest, as he put his car in gear.
“Ah, about that! Guess what? Guess what? Guess what?” suddenly, it seemed like all his attention was back on his phone call, whatever other distraction there had been, forgotten.
“Um, what? Did you finally manage to successfully carry out a business deal? Without your father’s help, and without any-” If there was one thing that could brighten up Yunho’s day, it was teasing his dear friend about his failed ventures into the business platform.
“Again, fuck you Jung! Keep this up and I won’t give you the news” he threatened.
“Ok, ok. Jeez. What’s up?” he gave up on the teasing, for now. He’d have enough time for that later. Donghae calling meant he was back from his overseas trip, which meant they’d get to spend a lot of time catching up, and humiliating one another for the sake of pure boredom.
“Nana’s going to be discharged!”
“…”
“Well…?”
“How do you know?” Yunho asked.
“Your mom called me, she’s with her now. I just got out of the airport and I’m on my way so we can meet up and go to visit her in the-” Donghae excitedly informed, only to be cut off mid-sentence.
“Hold on! Why is my mother calling you, to tell you about my Nana’s discharge from hospital!?” What the hell? Nana had been discharged and he hadn’t been informed? How dare them!?
“Oh that’s easy, they like me better than you.” Donghae whispered conspiratorially, sounding like he was about to burst from smugness.
“Excuse me? Who the fuck do you think you are, Dumbass!? Do not, under any circumstances, try to even think about getting your paws into my Nana! She’s mine!” Yunho’s screamed into the phone. Ok, so he was being childish, but Donghae was being mean! He knew exactly how much his Nana meant to him. And if he was being honest with himself, he was just a little hurt that his family hadn’t thought to inform him about her leave. Why hadn’t they?
“Are you being serious? Has she been released?” The threatening voice immediately turned into one of excitement. It wasn’t like his Nana had any serious health issues, but he hadn’t been able to cuddle with her at night, or eat her homemade snacks for over a week! That was not something he was happy about. And he missed having her fuss over him.
“Yes, she has. Where are you?”
“I’m just about to turn around and go to the hospital.”
“Um, are you on your phone?” Donghae suddenly asked.
“Yeah, duh. I’m speaking to you aren’t I?”
“Turn your phone off this instant! Have you no concern for road safety!?” he suddenly yelled in his ear.
“I’ll see you at the hospital.” Before Yunho could reply, Donghae cut the phone with an irritated huff. Oh yeah, did he forget to mention Donghae’s crazy safety rules?
Oh well. Nana, here I come!
………..><………..
Yunho couldn’t breathe.
Seems like Donghae had decided to build some muscle over his month-long trip. As nice as that may have been for anyone interested in the goofball, Yunho was not feeling the rewards at the moment.
His bones were currently being crushed.
Not exaggerating at all. He felt like his ribcage was about to get acquainted with his organs on a far more intimate level than normal!
“Ca-can’t brea-breath. Can’t breathe!” he gasped out, his palms desperately trying to get some blood movement in them; they too were squeezed in between the two bodies.
“Oh!” finally he was released. For a couple of seconds he just gasped, inhaling sweet, sweet air.
“Dude, you’ve let yourself go…” Donghae commented offhandedly as he stared at his friend frantically try to fill his lungs.
“Bastard” Was all Yunho said until he was sure he wasn’t going to die.
Once back to reality, he swatted his friend on the head - hard. “I have NOT ‘let myself go’, I just wasn’t expecting to have the life force squished out of me as soon as I’d exited my car!” he glared, secretly chastising himself because it was true. He hadn’t been working out as much as normal, too demotivated wit the lack of nagging from Nana. But, he’d been especially sloth-ing around since he’d met his adorable fireball.
Speaking of, he had to spill the beans to Donghae soon before he lost control of himself.
“Fuzz-ball, we have all the time in the world to degrade each other. But for now, let’s go and see Nana!” with that said, Donghae just hopped into the hospital, completely ignoring his friend whom was trying to lock the car before following the excited puppy.
They made their way to the VIP section of the hospital - forgetting to sign in.
Yunho had been to this room only once before, his mom forcing him to concentrate on the Resort instead of visiting Nana at every available hour. And anyway, they usually used the private hospital that was closer to their residence, or just got the family doctor to bring a team over to monitor her health. His dad had insisted that she go to a hospital this time, and Nana had refused to go unless it was a general hospital.
Honestly, they were like kids. And they had the nerve to tell him off, constantly, for being immature. His Nana had plainly refused to be treated at home or go to their regular hospital, simply because she wanted to make a statement to her son - that she was not happy with being forced to go to a healthcare setting like that!
If that wasn’t a whole pie of immature, than he didn’t know what was.
Adults.
They were just exiting the lift and about to go into the room when they saw two nurses wheeling a bed out of the room…and empty bed. Eh?
“Um, excuse me! Where’s the patient?” Yunho asked, quickly running towards them.
“Oh, Mr Jung. Did you not know, Mrs Jung was discharged a couple of hours ago.” The nurse pleasantly informed. She was probably thinking it was good news. And it was…it’s just that, he would have been happier with knowing that a little earlier.
So that he could have gone straight home, instead!
“Ah, well, no I wasn’t aware. Thank you.” he bowed to the nurses.
After a deep sigh, he turned towards Donghae. Glaring.
“Oh. Well…oops?” he offered in return, sheepishly.
“Oops? OOPS?” He was about to attack him, but then remembered the scene from outside the hospital and stopped himself.
Ok, so that was a wasted journey.
“Hey, it’s not my fault. I didn’t know she was already taken home.” Donghae lifted his hands in surrender, feeling gutted himself.
“Well, I guess there’s nothing to do but go home now.”
And that’s what they were going to do. Go home. That was the plan…
Until Yunho spotted Siwon by the vending machine, that is.
He was conflicted. On the one hand, he wanted to approach him and ask about Jaejoong. But on the other hand, Siwon was in the hospital, which meant he had someone who was here. It all came back to his guilt trip of the morning. Had he even considered that Siwon, too, may have problems, he asked himself. Was he really that bad at having authority?
“Didn’t think that was your type” Donghae whistled next to him, staring at Siwon too. At first, Yunho didn’t know what he was talking about. Then realised he’d probably been staring at Siwon for some time…long enough for Donghae to have noticed.
“Actually, it’s his cute, fiery, adorable friend I’m interested in.” There. He said it. And admitted it to himself, too. He was interested in Jaejoong, and was sick of fighting with his feelings.
Overwhelming feelings.
“Well, well, well. In that, case I’m going to talk to him, and interrogate you at home.” Donghae took off in the direction of Siwon whom had deserted the vending machine with two drinks in his hands, and was making his way towards the stairs. By the time it registered in Yunho’s brain to stop his friend, he was already standing next to Siwon, chatting happily.
Siwon, the poor guy, looked like he was just attacked by a bunch of crazy fangirls. He had the most confused expression on his face, looking this way and thought, almost like he was looking for rescue…
Yunho decided to be the hero and go save him from the madness that was his child-hood friend…and probably save his own ass in the process.
“So, if you don’t like the-” Donghae was animatedly talking about god-knows-what, but Yunho cut in just then.
“Any who! Why don’t we go home?” he tried to pull him along, but it was too late. Siwon had seen him. Not that he was expecting to get out without being recognised. It was Siwon, after all.
“Yunho?” he asked, sounding a little confused still.
“Oh, Siwon! Hi there. Um, what are you doing here?” Yunho tried to act and sound surprised, knowing full-well that Donghae would screw him over if he didn’t intervene. And he could feel Donghae’s eye boring into his back curiously. He’ll deal with that later.
Siwon’s eyes flitted to Donghae, before settling back on Yunho. “I could ask you the same question.” He said, tilting his head to the side.
Oh crap! Looks like Donghae had spilled something already. Oh why did he have to tell him he was interested in this guy’s friend? Especially when said ‘guy’ was a few feet away from them!
“We came to see Nana - I mean his grandmother” Donghae supplied. Thanks, Yunho thought. Great time to get the gist of things.
“Oh. Ok.” Siwon answered a little awkwardly.
“So…? What about you?” Yunho asked, trying to take attention away from whatever Donghae had said.
“Jaejoongie. I came to see hi-”
Jaejoongie. That was all Yunho heard, before his eyes shot towards Siwon, panic building in his heart.
“Jaejoong’s in the hospital? Why? Is he ok? Has he been hurt?” he fired questions at Siwon, not even bothering to hide his panic. Donghae and Siwon looked at each other before turning their collective attention back to him.
“He’s ok. A little upset. But he’s fine…” Siwon reassured him with a weird look on his face.
“Wh-what do you mean he’s fine? Was he in an accident?” Siwon’s words had obviously not been comforting enough to clear his thoughts.
“What? God, no! He wasn’t in an accident, thank the Lord.” He was a little ruffled now. What the hell was going on? He just came to get him and Jaejoong something to drink. He certainly wasn’t expecting Yunho here, or his panic for that matter.
Luckily, for them all, Donghae decided to step in to save his friend from unnecessary embarrassment. “Yun, why don’t you shut up for a second and let the gentleman explain?” He earned himself two sets of glaring eyes for that one. What? Was it wrong to call someone a gentleman? Geez.
“There’s nothing to explain. Jaejoongie’s here to see his sister, he’s fine. Though I don’t understand why you’re so freaked out, Yunho.”
“Si-sister?” Yunho stuttered. He felt relieved that Jaejoong was ok, but immediately guilty because obviously his sister wasn’t.
Siwon nodded, biting his lip. “If you don’t mind, can I go now? He’s waiting for a drink…” And he wanted to get away, too.
“Yeah, sorry. Um, actually, can I come with you?” he perked up, excited by the idea.
Siwon seemed uncomfortable again, looking more at Donghae than at Yunho, when he replied with, “I don’t think that’s a good idea”, a little uncertain. “It wasn’t even any of my business to tell you about Euna, in the first place.” He made a face, biting his lip again. He clearly wanted to go.
Before Yunho could protest and demand to see Jaejoong, a doctor came down the stairs, interrupting their conversation. “Siwon. I think Jaejoong’s about to hunt you down, if you don’t take him his drink” he declared, good-heartedly, with a big smile.
“Ah, Dr Park. Thanks for the warning!” Siwon laughed, waving at the doctor who smiled at Donghae and Yunho before walking off.
“Well, you heard the doc. I’d better get going. I guess I’ll see you in the office.” With a final nod, he walked up the stairs, leaving the other two with their thoughts.
Yunho was about to follow him when Donghae pulled him back with a disapproving frown on his face.
“What are you doing?” he demanded.
“I was just-”
“No. Mr, you are not going to creepily stalk the poor guy while he’s with his ill sibling!” Donghae declared, with a tight hold on Yunho’s arm.
It took a moment of tugging before Yunho came to his senses and realised, yes, that would have been completely inappropriate. With a sigh of defeat, his shoulders drooped.
So that’s why Jae wasn’t at work…
Now he felt like an even bigger prick. If that was even possible.
“Yah, don’t look like a kicked puppy. Come on, we still have Nana to see.” Donghae tried to cheer his friend up.
With nothing else to do, the two decided to just head home.
Just when they were about to get to their car, Donghae almost got run over by a purple bicycle.
“OMG, I AM SO SORRY! ARE YOU OK?” The owner quickly got off, looking for any sign of injury on her almost-victim.
“Don’t worry, I’m fine!” Donghae said, with a faraway, almost dreamy look in his eyes, which Yunho missed due to his distraction with his own feelings.
“Thank god! For a second I thought I’d hurt you.” The girl laughed easily, clearly happy that she hadn’t hurt anyone. Probably even happier it was an easy-going person.
“In that case, I think you did hurt me just a little.” Donghae said, with a serious look. Both Yunho and the girl looked over at him, not finding any sign of injury.
“I did…?” She trailed off, uncertain.
“Yup. But you can easily fix that.” He said.
The girl just looked at him, a little confused before looking at Yunho questioningly. Yunho, in return looked at herm just as confused. What the hell was Donghae doing?
“How?”
“I think my injuries can be overlooked with a simple number and name…” he seemed pretty pleased with himself for that one, if the cheesy smile was anything to go by.
“Excuse me?” she lifted an eyebrow, one hand going on her hip. Damn, she’s cute, Donghae thought.
“You heard me, Miss…?”
“Dara” she supplied after an awkward silence.
“Ah, such a pretty name. Do you have a number to go with it?” By this point, Yunho’s jaw was hanging open.
WTF was this? Donghae was making a fool of himself.
“Yes, I happen to have a number.” She said, with a look of pity and disgust on her face. Yunho was quiet amused, it’s not every day he got to witness Donghae humiliate himself like this. At least this will take the heat off when he’s being questioned about his crush on Jaejoong.
“Well, can I have it, beautiful?” Donghae seemed so pleased with himself, that it probably hadn’t even occurred to him that she was clearly unimpressed.
She just stared at him, glanced towards Yunho who was trying to hide his laughter, and turned her attention back to Donghae before uttering in the most deadpan voice, “No” before picking up her bike and walking off.
He just blinked. Seriously. Donghae just stood there and blinked.
The smile slowly started to slide off his face. Talk about a delayed reaction.
“Whoa. That was just sad.” Yunho teased, patting him on the head.
Donghae pouted and crossed his arms before turning towards Yunho.
“Well, I guess I’m not allowed to make fun of you now.” He truly looked upset saying that.
“Cheer up! You still get to hear how Joongie bosses me around.”
Donghae perked up at that. “Joongie, huh?”
Both men smiled at each other before getting in their cars to go and hug Nana for comfort.
