A Miserable Feast

Apr 09, 2011 16:33

Unlike the dark, narrow halls of the barracks, the Great Hall was bright with candle- and fire-light. The smell of wood-smoke lingered in the air along with the scents of the dishes set out on the table ( Read more... )

Nieta was late to the feast, but it looked like she had not missed much. She had known that it would be harder this time, but still she had not expected to see so many down faces in the room. And on top of that, the food looked bad, not just unappetizing. Nieta was weary and she smelled like dogs, but at least she had brought with her a basket of fresh apples from the orchard. It was not a very good dessert, but compared to a lot of the other foods on the table, she was glad she had it.

She set the basket down and then stepped back to survey the room. There was no music coming from the gallery. She should change this. But for now, she simply looked around for the rest of the staff, or somebody that she could help, anything to make the party seem less dismal.

"Nieta!"

Rem walked up to her, a smile on his face. He gave a glance down at the apples, noting that she'd been to the orchard, and then looked back to her eyes.

"How did you fare?"

Nieta shook her head, silent. She looked around the room once more. How much were they permitted to say? She did not want a lecture from Isabel right now.

"The dogs found many scents, but I don't know if they were hers. They are too young. I said that. We didn't go very far." She gestured to the apples. The had searched the inner bailey. That was all. Nieta had known already that their target was not there.

"How are things here?" She glanced again at their new companions.

Rem let out a thoughtful hum, but pressed no further. Nieta had told him what he needed to know.

He followed Nieta's gaze, surveying the room. "Our guests are quiet, as of yet. However, I've yet to speak to one who was pleased with the circumstances." He frowned lightly, "Though I supposed it would be a surprise if I did. While I do not begrudge Joseph for its quality, poor man, the meal is certainly below par."

"He could have put some jam on the table," Nieta's mocked a pout, but her expression soon dissolved into a grin as she caught sight of an exhausted Joe. It was a pity he could not hear her.

"There is toast, but no jam."

Rem grinned. "Sit. I will bring you some jam from the pantry, if you like; no need to trouble Joseph for it."

Nieta returned the grin, and sat, "So..." She paused, struggling to think of the word, and eventually giving up. She was too tired, "... Kind."

She liked running with the dogs. She always had. But after six hours following scents which led nowhere, she more than ready to sit down. She would not follow Joe's example and sleep at the table, but it was tempting.

"Make certain you close the cupboard after!"

"Of course," he said, amused. With that, Rem disappeared into the kitchen.

He returned in only a few minutes' time, jar in hand. "Here." He set it on the table in front of Nieta and then took a seat next to her.

Nieta wasted no time. She thanked Rem, and then sawed the end off a loaf of bread and spread a thick layer of jam over it. She stopped to offer the jar and the loaf to Rem before taking a bite, and then over the top of her snack, she surveyed the room again.

"You said it had been quiet. That means that there was no trouble?" She lowered her voice, "From anyone?"

Rem shook his head and waved away the jam with a quiet "no, thank you".

It wasn't until Nieta asked her question that he spoke again, his own words low. "None that I have seen. I appreciate this moment of peace, however temporary."

"You say that because you have not spent half the night walking all over the castle. When it is your turn and you have had no sleep, this will not seem so peaceful." She smiled and bit into her toast.

"Still, I'm glad everyone is safe."

"As am I." Rem leaned back in his chair, folding his hands in his lap. His gaze trailed over to Joe, who was still sleeping.

Turning back to Nieta, Rem said, "When you are finished, you might wish to rest as Joseph does." Then, wryly, "Before a disaster does arise."

"And miss meeting our guests?" She shook her head. "They will have questions the same way we all had questions. I will help, where I can. Besides," She reached for the jug of thin wine and was disappointed to find that it was not water. She put it down, "I don't think we are going to find her."

Rem's smile faded off. "I wonder," he began in a hushed tone, "if she vanished just as he did." He ran his finger and thumb through his hair, twisting the lock between them.

Nieta nodded again, "But there has been..." She gestured vaguely, searching for the right word again, and soon giving up. "I don't think it will matter if we stopped looking."

That was not what she had meant to say at all.

"I think you're right. I should rest before trying to talk to our guests. I am not making sense."

Rem dropped his lock of hair, instead touching Nieta's shoulder. "They will be here when you are rested, do not worry. I will attend to them as they require."
