... It begins

Apr 09, 2011 12:40

It’s dark when the Keep’s newest guests arrive. The cold night air has seeped into the stones of the barracks sending a chill throughout the rooms. No fire has been laid, no lamp lit to beat back the cold or dispel the dark. Each cell remains exactly as it has for months on end, almost as though no one were expecting the small rooms to be occupied ( Read more... )

The sun was just setting when Bryn was brought to the Keep. She had been enjoying watching the sunset, sitting cross-legged on her favorite flat rock, when suddenly all the light disappeared.

She shrieked in surprise, scrambled to try to get to her feet and in the process found her hands grasping the blankets. Where had the blankets come from? The ground? The lack of bushes? What had happened to the bushes and the wind?

Panic spiraled higher. Had someone gotten her? Had her parents found her? The government? She didn't know but she had to get out. Had to.

If it wasn't for slightly heightened night vision, she might have bumped into everything in the room. She could see just enough to get to the door. Her hands grasped at it, wrenched it open and stepped out into the hallway. Bryn trembled, senses heightened by the rush of adrenaline in her body, and tried to figure out what to do.

Hey now, watch where you're stepping, Bryn. Thumbelina scrambled out of the way, moving closer to the wall. This certainly wasn't the first time she had almost been stepped on. After all, she had grown up on a farm, but the animals had grown used to her presence. Here was another story entirely.

"Please don't step on me!"

Bryn made a surprised noise and shuffled back from the source of the voice. Her hands pressed to the walls and she looked down. If only there was some light?

"Wh-who is it? Who is that?" she stammered out, heart still pounding in her chest.

"Ah, my name is Thumbelina." She waves her arms in hopes Bryn will see her. It would be so much easier if she had someone big with her.

"Down here in front of you.

"It's a pleasure to meet you," she replied automatically, eyes searching for the source still. Bryn swallowed and finally focused on...something. Something small. No, someone. "You can call me Bryn," she continued, shifting uncomfortably.

"Hello, Bryn. How do you do?"

Thumbelina knows what she is about to ask is a bit much. Yet, this place is far too unfamiliar to be left here alone.

"Could you possibly pick me up? It's too dark and I don't want to be alone."

"Oh yes, of course," she replied distractedly. This was so strange and inexplicable. Where were they?

Bryn reached down, grasping toward the voice, expecting a midget or small person or...well, whatever they called themselves. Her hands grasped at air until at last she located someone much smaller. Thumbelina was smaller than a Barbie doll, even. As carefully as she could, Bryn picked Thumbelina up and brought her up close to her chest.

"Are you from here? Do you know where we are?" she asked, trying to get a better look at the small girl.

Attracted to the sound of voices, that faint flickering glow has again appeared at the end of the hall. Perhaps, for now, it is too faint to notice. Then again, with darkness and stone walls closing in all around, any light might seem bright. And this one is only getting brighter.

Thumbelina is careful to remain still so Bryn can find her in the dark. "No. I'm not." Thumbelina answered Bryn's question sadly. She just wanted to go home to her mother. It wasn't fair. She had lost Cornelius and from the looks of it, she was never going to see her mother again. It simply wasn't fair. But there was one upside to being here. That toad couldn't find her.

She turned her head when light catches her eye. "What's that over there?"

She heard the sadness in her voice, and for a moment she was going to question the smaller girl further, but then she caught sight of the light as well.

Well that wasn't ominous or alarming. Bryn pressed her back to the door to her room, wondering if she'd be safer in there or on the run.

"Some kind of light," she murmured to Thumbelina. "What do you want to do?"

The light only gets brighter. There were sounds now too, echoing down the halls and off the walls so that their origins were unclear at best. Were they coming from the light, or the dark?

Bryn was likely to feel her shirt bunch where tiny hands were gripping the fabric. At first Thumbelina thought the light was comforting. Now, she's not so sure. She shook her head. "I don't want to be out here."

She didn't feel it. Bryn was weighing her options and trying desperately to figure out what was right. She couldn't shift, not now that she was carrying someone.

"Then we go inside," she whispered, and pressed her back harder against the door to take them inside. At least there perhaps they might be passed by, go unnoticed.

A woman appeared around the corner. A plain, ordinary woman bearing a lantern. But she seemed to miss Bryn and Thumbelina further down the hall, as she began to knock insistently at every door she passed. She did not pause for long, however, and it would only be a short time before she was upon them.

The knock startled Thumbelina. It wasn't entirely unexpected, and yet it manages to startle her. "It followed us. There's something out there." She looked up at Bryn. What were they going to do now?

Bryn shivered, and listened as the women knocked at doors. One after the other, closer and closer. She stood there quietly behind the door, trying to figure out what to do.

"Sooner or later someone will find us somewhere. What if it's someone else not from here? We'd be safer with someone else to have our backs, wouldn't we?"

Bryn didn't wait for an answer. She opened the door just enough to take a peek at who was out there. They were knocking. It was such a normal thing...
