There seem to be an awful lot of pigeons about today. They blanket the courtyards and pathways, cooing and fidgeting and fighting. They’re as flighty as ever, wheeling away in great flocks as soon as anyone approaches. All but the odd one or two, who hop on the spot half-heartedly, or else fly in a circle and quickly land again ( Read more... )

First spiders and now pigeons. This keep really has a pest problem that it needs to deal with. It's really a shame that his mabari isn't here. The dog would have a blast chasing the birds about. Oh well, here's hoping that Vie won't chase him down with a cloth full of the mess these rats with wings leave behind.

He can't help but notice that some of these rats with wings are bolder than the others. Even more curious, each of them wears a harness. Hawke is nothing if not curious and decides to get a closer look.

Many of the pigeons scatter, but one in particular does not. Instead, it coos and approaches Hawke.

The harness this one wears holds a canister. In the canister, there is a scroll of paper.

Well isn't this one friendly? Hawke steps towards it slowly. It may be trained but it's still an animal and he rather not chase the thing if he doesn't have to.

Once he's close enough Hawke reaches down to pluck the canister from the bird.

The bird allows Hawke to take the canister, and once he does so, it hops away.

Hawke isn't sure where these birds came from, after all he's seen no way out of this place but maybe this will give him a hint.

"Now let's have a look." He opens the canister and lets whatever note is in there to fall into his hand.

Alright that's completely useless.

Hawke flips it over to see if there's anything on the other side like a name or hopefully some kind of address.

There is, unfortunately, nothing.

Hawke scratches his head. There's no telling who sent this or what it even means. Is it supposed to be a hint? If so it's a pretty pathetic one. Hawke crumples the note and tosses it aside. No need to keep it when he can just write it down later.

Maybe he should check another bird to see if it actually has something useful.

There are still many pigeons flitting and fluttering about. They haven't been scared away yet, though some are certainly friendlier than others.

And some still bear canisters.

Hawke spots another with a canister and heads towards it. Hopefully this one will have something better than the one before it.

The pigeon bounces at first away from Hawke, but then closer to him. This one is warier, but it is still a messenger.

Hawke stops and crouches, holding out his hand to beckon it to come closer.

"Come on now. Give me the canister and this will be easy for the both of us."

The pigeon bobs its head, then moves closer to Hawke. It's well within grabbing distance, but do be careful, Champion.

Ever so slowly Hawke reaches out to take the canister.

"There's a good bird..."

The pigeon lets Hawke take the canister and even lets out an appreciative coo.
