Noise in a cell that she'd been fairly certain was empty, as of yesterday.
On her daily patrol, Shepard doubled back 'round the corner she'd just moved past, going slowly and cautiously. She was mindful of where her pistol was but not overly worried about who or what waited for her. Hell, maybe it was nothing. Maybe the commander had finally begun to hear things that weren't there.
"Anybody?" she called, keeping her voice firm but non-threatening. Last thing she needed on her hands was a panicked guest.
Footsteps. She lifted her gun and stepped into the corner just as whoever it was doubled back and-
"Shepard?"
Tali would know her anywhere, and even if that weren't true, nobody else could show up in a place like this as if it were routine. Only Shepard had this much luck. Or skill. Whatever the combination, Tali lowered her gun, and snapped on the safety with a series of comforting automatic clicks.
The hope that she might have confirmation on the survival of the people she cared for, while not disappeared, had dwindled to something weary and small. That hope came roaring back, with the impulse to charge the quarian right on its heels.
Shepard refrained from doing so, if barely, and settled for a dignified sprint that left her halting a scant foot away.
"You've got no idea, Tali." Looking her over, trying to see if she'd sustained any injuries, "Are you hurt? Did you just get here?"
Dignified is the word for it, surely. But Tali could take some comfort in that, the clear relief on Shepard's face. It was habit, to seek out her Captain's approval, this Captain in particular.
"I'm fine. I woke up a few minutes ago and I..." She glanced back as if the open door to her cell held some portion of the answers. Focus, Tali'Zorah, "Shepard, I don't understand. What's going on, where are we?"
