The journey back to the library was quick, but the dread that settled itself inside Xanth grew with every minute that passed. His mind reeled with possibilities: that Riku and Kairi had been attacked; that Kairi had gone off somewhere and not returned; that Riku was just having fever dreams; or perhaps the worst, that Riku felt himself about to turn.

Xanth shook his head, focusing on simply returning to the library.

When he did, he found that the the library wasn't in any sort of disrepair, so an attack was unlikely. He made his way up the stairs to the study Riku was in, and then he asked for Ironhide to wait while he investigated the inside.

Xanth now stood in front of the door to Riku's room.

Loudly, he knocked.

Kairi sat slumped in a hard-backed wooden chair, her journal open in her lap. She hadn't slept. She could feel the scratch of tiredness (not tears) at the corners of her eyes and the back of her throat. Her eyes were red and shadowed in her pale face, and so heavy that it had taken her a long time to focus on the words in front of her. Now she looked between them and Riku in a detached sort of way that made her wonder if she'd really understood at all.

She was supposed to be watching the door. She should be watching the door to make sure they were still safe.

She hadn't been keeping watch for hours, not since her legs had become to heavy to get up every half hour or so. Now, instead, she sat and watched Riku.

And Riku was asking for Xanth.

And she hadn't slept.

There was a loud knock. She jumped. Her journal spilled out of her lap and hit the floor and for one moment, her mind was clear and she was alert.

But only one.

"Who's there?"

There was Kairi's voice. She didn't sound injured - only wary, and she had full rights to be. This alleviated only one of Xanth's fears and eliminated only one possibility.

Every other terrible scenario was still possible.

"X--Xanth," he answered, then cracked the door open to look inside. His mace was not at the ready, but it was still in hand. Xanth hoped that using it would not be necessary.

At the sight of him she went to rise, to step forward and open the door. Too tired even to show her relief, she instead greeted him with a blank expression. She nearly missed the step and tried to cover the stumble as best she could. She didn't think he'd noticed.

"Xanth..."

There was nothing else to say. Riku was...

Her thoughts, like molasses, would move no further.
