A night at the movies

Sooo... it's a new decade and it starts with heavy snow and even more snow...
Great.

On another note, I watched Avatar yesterday.
I wasn't really into the blue alien thingy but since everyone is talking about the movie I thought I might give it a try...

Visually Avatar is mind blowing... the planet Pandora is just gorgeous and lush and director James Cameron takes the audience on a magical guided tour to see all its beauties.

Highlight: when main character Jake rides his very own flying dragon (they call them banshees and some other name I forgot) for the first time. That sequence is nothing short of amazing and reminded me a lot of the signal fires on the snowy mountaintops of Middle Earth being lit one by one in "Lord of the Rings" (without having its emotional impact though, sorry, Cameron!).

The first half of the story is completely dedicated to exploring the planet and it's here that the movie really soars... after a while you even forget that the main characters are digitally created blue aliens... you just get used to it because there's so much else to look at, too.
The second half of the movie is where the action begins, showing an uneven war between human high-tech weapons and the blue aliens' bows and arrows. From then on it's action all the way with the customary explosions and death toll...

But none of the special effects can hide that the story is a cheap rip-off of "Dances with Wolves"...
it's practically 100% stolen from Kevin Costner's movie about a civil war soldier becoming a member of a Sioux clan!
What was James Cameron thinking???
It is the weak story and its predictability that prevented me from fully enjoying the movie.

All in all, Avatar is a fun ride and definitely worth watching just for the visuals but don't expect more than just that...
