It was amazing how much work was necessary for a small get together, but also how quickly and easily it went with the help of another person. Especially when that person happened to be on staff ( Read more... )

Smiling lightly, Aara's gaze falls to her cupecake once more. "You know... where I am from, I do not believe anyone has ever giving me something before." There's a sort of sad light in her gaze, but her smile is one that shows she has accepted it. "Nothing I didn't need, that is." Like clothing. Which was still something she was truly grateful for.

Her eyes lift back to Xanth's, her smile happy once more. "It's nice. This... is nice." She holds the cupcake a little closer to her, grin widening in delight. Peeling a bit of the paper off her cupcake, Aara peers around the small cupcake, trying to figure out the best angle to take a bite. Nibbling her lip--she doesn't want to get the colored stuff on her face in front of xanth--Aara takes a deep breath and goes for it, taking a bite--and getting colored frosting on her nose.

Her attention isn't on that, however. Her attention is one the fluffy, sweet treat she can now taste in her mouth, and her eyes light up and widen completely as she chews quickly, swallowing when she can.

"It's--!" She doesn't have words, but her excitement and expression alone should testify just how much she enjoyed it. "I want to make this!"

Aara's excitement is infectious and Xanth finds himself grinning even more widely. He's glad to be able to give her something, anything, if she's had so few gifts in her life.

But the icing on her nose doesn't go unnoticed. His grin turns back into a sympathetic smile.

"Y-You, um. You've-- y-you've got-- r-right here." Xanth taps his nose.

Blinking twice, a dark blush rises over Aara's cheeks as she realized her predicament. She quickly lifts her free hand to her face to block the frosting from view, eyes frantically searching for a napkin of some kind. Thankfully one is nearby, and Aara darts over to take it, wiping the tip of her nose and blushing darker still when she returns to Xanth's side.

"Thank you..."

She might be completely embarassed, but she was glad he told her.

"N-No problem," he says, holding back a grin. "D-Do you-- want to t-try some more? They-- th-they have d-different flavors, t-too..."

Aara looks up in awe, staring up at Xanth as a beautiful smile crosses her face. She's definitely excited, and likes the sound of that.

"More flavors?"

She steps a tiny bit closer to Xanth, as if he needed to whisper it or the world would know and there suddenly wouldn't be any more cupcakes for her to partake of. "What flavors?"

Then a tiny pink tint rises over her cheeks, and while Aara's smiling really happily she negatively shakes her head and sheepishly looks to her feet. "I don't want to eat too many. Others here deserve to eat their fill." That was her way. Only accept after no one else wanted any more. It always enabled her to know she wouldn't be in the way.

That brings a perplexed look to Xanth's face and he tilts his head. "Y-Yeah but-- you-- y-you deserve some, t-too."

Smiling again, Xanth adds, "A-And anyway, there-- th-there're a--a lot." He takes a step towards the cupcake table and motions for Aara to follow him.

That sentence alone put all Aara's thoughts on hold. She looks up at Xanth, peering into his eyes and scrutinizing the expression on his face.

She deserves some too.

...But, why? Warring feeling clash inside of her. Elation and confusion and sorrow. She isn't able to dwell on her confused thoughts and feelings for long however, because Xanth was taking charge, leading Aara to the cupcake table. A smile tugs her lips as he motions for her to follow. She can't help it. She's drawn in, and finds herself smiling widely as her heart flutters in her chest. She keeps her eyes on Zanth's form so she doesn't lose him in the crowd of mingling people, though she is also looking for the brightly decorating cupcakes as well.

Xanth stops in front of the table and picks up a chocolate cupcake. The one he'd given Aara earlier was vanilla, and though there were only those two to pick from, they were vastly different.

"H-Here," he says, offering the cupcake to Aara. "Th-this one's ch--chocolate."

Small smile alight on her face, Aara lifts both hands to tentatively accept Xanth's offer of a chocolate cupcake. She admires it for a second, then looks up to Xanth in question.

"Are you not going to eat one?"

"O-Oh-- well-- y-yeah, I, I-I'll probably h-have another," he admits, smile turning to a lopsided grin. "B-But, this one? I-It's for you."

Blushing again--darker this time--Aara carefully accepts the cupcake from Xanth. He's been so nice to her this evening. So kind, and generous.

"What can I give you?"

"Y-You don't... have to g-- give me a-anything. It's-- i-it's a present, not-- not a f-favor."

"A-And besides," he adds, "it-- i-it's not-- l-like I made these, o-or anything, I-I mean. That-- th-that was-- s-someone else."

"A..." Aara looks down to the cupcake in her hands, eyes wide. A present? For her? Heartbeat picking up speed, she considers how to respond. Her throat tightens up. She could probably count on one hand times people had given her something just for the sake of giving it to her. When her eyes lift to Xanth's once more, overflowing warmth and thanks are in her gaze. A small, tentative smile grows across her lips.

"Thank you..."

Smiling widely, Aara shakes her head. "You don't have to make it for it to be special. It is the thought that took me by surprise and... warms me." She doesn't even know how to make him understand her amount of gratitude, though her words create a small rush of warmth to her cheeks.

"Here. I want you to have this one, Xanth." She reaches for a cupcake on the table, and shyly hold it out to him, hoping he will accept it.

Xanth feels Aara's gratitude, and he doesn't question it. After all, it wasn't so terribly long ago that he, too, was shocked that people treated him as an equal. And then for them to not only tolerate, but care for him...

Aara might have come from a similar place. If she did, she needed this just as much as he did.

Grinning broadly, Xanth takes the cupcake from Aara. "Th--thank you." He peels the paper back from the cupcake and digs in. Now it's his turn to wear blue frosting, though it smears on his upper lip, rather than his nose.

He accepted her small offer. For some reason, that made her happier still. She carefully unwraps the paper around her cupcake when Xanth does, taking a smaller bite this time and trying to be certain she doesn't get frosting on her face again.

When she looks up at Xanth with shining eyes of delight at the taste Aara almost chokes on her mouthful seeing it was his turn to have frosting on his face. She steps toward him, hand rising part way toward his face before she realizes what she is doing and gasps, coughing harshly a couple times as she attempts to gather control over her breathing.

She'll warn him about the frosting in a moment.

"A--Aara!"

Xanth takes notice of little other than Aara's breathing trouble - in fact, the frosting is missed entirely. He steps closer and puts a hand on her shoulder, peering down. She's not choking, right?

Please say she's not choking.
