Zhaneel hadn't been quite so eager to get out and about for some time, having preferred to remain quietly out of sight and keeping to her own devices. However, Aara's was an eagerness that couldn't be denied and Zhaneel found she didn't want to deny it. To find another so fond of the skies here at the Keep was a small blessing perhaps to some, but to the gryphon it was grand

Aara saw the shadow drop over her form before she saw who--or what--was behind her. The hairs rose along the back of her neck and every nerve thrummed in her being as instinct told her to run.
She heard her name, but didn't know from which direction it came. She was already looking over her shoulder and up into the air, eyes wide and terror spreading through her.
"Homa..."
She stares. Had it been a trap after all? Then her brain kicks her limbs into action and she kicks up her heels and runs.
"HOMA! Run!" She screamed it, looking around for others the gryphon might attack and wondering who could ever be safe. She screamed again, terror racing threw her, peeled her cotton dress up over her head, and transformed.
She would save these people. She would give everything to save them--even those she did not yet know.
/sneaks in with Varric, if no one minds?sayhitobiancaAugust 13 2011, 06:21:10 UTC
Varric had been walking back to the barracks from the keep, skirting along the edge of the green (ugh, nature), when he heard Aara screaming. He couldn't make sense of the first word, but the second he got just fine, and there was no mistaking that tone. Aara was in trouble.
He changed course immediately, running towards the sound, and made it just in time to catch Aara's transformation, the end result of which stopped him right in his tracks to stare.
Bloody flaming pyre of Andraste.
Despite the shock, he still searched instinctively for whatever threat had made Aara scream, but all he saw was Zhaneel, in the air. His brain was a little too busy being stuck on the fact that Aara was a bloody flaming dragon to connect that.
This was what he got for that comment about only knowing one person who could turn into a dragon. But now wasn't the time to dwell on that, not with Aara and Zhaneel potentially in danger. (Seriously, though, dragon?)
How could we mind?! :DbondedgryphonAugust 13 2011, 07:19:41 UTC
Zhaneel had expected jubilation on her arrival and what she received instead was horror and she didn't know what to make of it. The human girl looked up at her and the voice sounded as if it belonged to Aara, by there was none of the awe and happiness. No, Zhaneel might not but used to being the source of terror from another being, but it was undeniably herself that was earning the response.
"Aara, wha-" she begins, but the human turns on her heel and bolts. Zhaneel pulls up, having nearly touched down onto the ground, and beats her wings to gain altitude once more. She swiveled her head and looked beneath her, confusion and guilt knotting her stomach. What she sees beneath her draws a gasp from deep in her throat as she falters awning beat.
Where the girl once stood was now something dreadfully reminiscent of the cold drakes we had faced during the war. She skrees and shifts her path, confused while a deeper feeling curls in her stomach: fear.
A figure approaches at a run, catching the gryphon's eye and ear. She knew that voice,

Aara, now a pearly white dragon, was too busy taking rapid flight, lifting herself into the air with heavy wing beats as she screams her panic in a dragon's roar.
It was a warning to those around her--not that they knew the fear that pounded in her heart. Turning swiftly so her back was not to her foe, she noted the gryphon's descent toward the dwarf, missing their conversation entirely from the ringing in her ears, and dives.
She had to save him before the home strikes with beak or talon.

"I didn't either, Feathers. Is that what she was screaming about?"
Trust him, Zhaneel, he didn't miss the irony, either. Though at least this was less 'loony suspicious mage who could turn into a dragon' and more 'friend who happened to neglect to mention she could turn into a dragon.' That's somewhat better.
Or at least it would be, if Aara hadn't decided it would be a good idea to attempt to divebomb them. Or, actually, maybe just Zhaneel, if she really was why Aara had been so freaked out. Which meant Varric moved to stand in front of Zhaneel, between her and Aara, and looked up.
His fingers twitched as he resisted the urge to grab Bianca that was now an automatic response to a dragon flying at him. Which was normally an incredibly good automatic response, but he really didn't want to shoot Aara.
Varric wasn't sure Aara'd ever actually seen him, so he called up to her, "Birdie! Come on, you don't want to attack us, we're friends!"
<3 Ah, sweet chaos!!bondedgryphonAugust 13 2011, 08:34:34 UTC
Zhaneel lands and pads a few steps closer to Varric, sizing up her companion for the first time (literally and figuratively). However, height has never been a manner she has learned to judge someone, so she completely steps past that mentally

XDDDD! Last tag for tonight, I am afraid. D:angha_firebirdAugust 13 2011, 09:23:31 UTC
Mid-dive, Aara wondered if this had been some laid out trap all along by homa supporters. Then the squat young man spoke with Varric's soothing voice and Aara gasped, her dragon's eyes widening as a confused and worried screech rent through the air. Wings billowing ans rapidly beating behind her, Aara managed to avoid collision at the last possible moment as gravity assists her in her dive. She swerves to the side, missing both the gryphon and the man standing protectively in front of her sword enemy, no small amount of shock splitting through her form. In avoiding harming Varric or Zhaneel, however, Aara's long wing and foreleg smacked and cracked against some topiary sculpture seconds before she hit and slid across the ground

No worries! I should be heading to bed as well.sayhitobiancaAugust 13 2011, 09:48:46 UTC
This was what Varric did. He was used to defending people from dragon attacks - though, granted, normally it was by remaining a good distance away and filling the dragon full of bolts, which was a much better tactic but not one that really came in handy when the dragon was also a friend

I .. I had gone to bed already, lmao.bondedgryphonAugust 13 2011, 20:08:40 UTC
Zhaneel is buffeted by wind as Aara shifts her course at the last second, she and Varric both missed by the dragon as she cuts right above them. Heart in her throat, the gryphon flinches as Aara connects with the decorative bushes, snapping them off solidly with the noir of one wing

XDDDDDD!!! Love, love.angha_firebirdAugust 13 2011, 20:35:45 UTC
Aara crouches low to the ground, her long, slender neck bowed back as she eyes Varric and Zhaneel as Varric approaches. A deep rumbling vibrates in her chest, a long and slender tongue slipping out to test the air as a quiet hiss escapes. She flinches away, not wanting to harm those unwilling to harm her, but also wary of their intentions, despite their voiced words.
Slightly incredulous, Aara eyes Zhaneel over the top of Varic's head. If the homa was true to her word, however, and did not have any ulterior motive, then Aara had no qualm with her. The fact that Zhaneel was not simply attacking her now might prove the gryphon's words rang true, but fight and flight had been too completely trained in her. Aara had never met a peaceful homa in her life.
XD So was I, but I couldn't resist one last tagsayhitobiancaAugust 13 2011, 23:04:00 UTC
Though there was no immediate danger, the tension was still obvious, and it was setting Varric incredibly ill at ease. He was reasonably good at talking his way out of problems, but usually those problems involved things like convincing a slaver that the boy they were trying to rescue was actually the Viscount's son, or conning templars into believing that Hawke was a Knight-Commander. They generally didn't involve an injured dragon potentially getting ready to attack them

Zhaneel studies Aara from what she considers a safe distance away; ie: she could get to air before the dragon could get to her. As calm and sedate as the dragon appears at the moment, Zhaneel will not take the risk of approaching any closer than she already has.
"I meant no harm," she says softly, her golden gaze on Aara. Her gaze shifts to Varric as he speaks, ears still trained on Aara should she move suddenly. "She appears to understand us, even if she cannot speak."
Again her golden gaze flits to Aara, "Can you speak, Aara?"
No worries! <333angha_firebirdAugust 14 2011, 16:43:53 UTC
Feeling suddenly sheepish and chastised because they seemed so calm and kind while she had been the one to panic, the low growl in her chest ceased, and her maw snapped shut. Did they truly mean no harm?
She sits a little higher, her head tilting slightly in one direction as she considers this. If Zhaneel truly wished to be her friend, she had certainly done a good deal to botch that up. But a homa? Could homa and angha ever exist peacefully?
Perhaps all it took was one homa and one angha--and a specific circumstance.
Hunching down into a sitting position to show she meant no harm, Aara lowered her head and slowly shook it back and forth to show yes--she understood them and no--she could not speak while in this form.

All right, the growl stopping and her jaw closing was definitely a good sign. It made him stop itching quite so much at not having his crossbow in his hands, at least. Definitely progress.
When Aara responded to Zhaneel's question with a headshake, he felt a little twinge of relief. "Looks like you're right."
At least they had that much. He turned back to Aara, taking a small, careful step towards her.
"Can you change back?" Not only will he feel a lot more comfortable talking to her when she was human, but it would also be a lot easier to figure out how badly she was injured.
Sorry, you two. ;___; I'm tagging from my phone and didn't get the notifbondedgryphonAugust 15 2011, 20:50:00 UTC
Zhaneel has a moment of profound relief when Aara shakes her head to the both of them. Yes, it would make things a bit more difficult that she could not speak in her current form, but she could understand them and that was a huge help.
Varric asks her if she can change back into her human form and the gryphon watches and listens expectantly, ear tufts perked forward. She then pauses, recalling a particularly human trait.
"Her clothing.." She rises and glances back in the direction Aara had taken off from. The quick look is enough to catch sight of the cotton dress laying just where it had been shucke off.
Wasting no time, Zhaneel pads off toward it, clearly moving away from the dragon and dwarf to retrieve the garment. She picks it up in one forefoot, golden eyes glancing over it and seeming to find it relatively unsoiled after being cast off. Then, she nearly takes to the air to fly back to the pair, pausing even before her muscles had collected
