Derek grunted in response. Of course they were going. That'd been why he'd come over, because he'd promised he wouldn't do anything without her. And because he knew she would want to go, and there was no way he wasn't going with her.

But apparently he needed to be more specific, since she was adding a 'please' onto her comment. "Of course we're going. Places only opened for a limited time, with locked rooms we're supposed to stay out of?"

Chloe laughed. She couldn't help it.

It was kind of like old times again.

"Yeah. No pesky ghost telling us to open them, though." She grinned, grabbed her journal and key, and turned back to Derek. "Any idea where the opening to the passageway is?"

Yeah, just like old times. Much of the beginning of their relationship was based on exploring places they shouldn't be and trying to find out information. He'd wonder what that said about them, but, eh. Part of his life.

"No, just a pesky lord telling us to stay out." He smirked back, then shrugged. "Shouldn't take us too long to find it." He'd already explored all of the barracks, an entrance that had been locked or not there before would be pretty easy to spot.

"What do you need that for?" he asked, pointing at the journal.

Nodding, Chloe knew he was right. It should be pretty hard to miss the entrance to the deep underground. Suddenly she shivered, her excitement giving way for a sprinkle of fear. Underground usually meant graves, which usually meant ghosts and dead bodies, which usually meant--

She cut that line of thinking off real quick, and managed a small chuckle at Derek's words. "Yeah. We'll find it."

At his question, Chloe merely grinned, opened the journal, and began fiddling with a few things. "Contingency plan," She murmured quietly, though she was hoping Derek wouldn't have any harsh comment to make about that.

Then, after a bit more fiddling--Chloe hadn't made a post in her journal yet, she smiled as she got the audio to word and leaned back with a self-satisfied sigh. "There."

Then, she left her journal entry.

"Dear journal,

Going below.

You're not so humble servant,

Chloe."

Derek resisted the urge to roll his eyes when she took the journal out. Right. Contingency plan. Not that he was against making a post on the journals, he'd just planned to do his after they were done. When they knew if there was anything worthwhile down there. If they did, Derek'd tell people. If not, no need to be dramatic about it.

But it was important to Chloe, so except for one comment and some grumbling, he shut up about it and waited for her to finish.

"Ready to go?"

Shutting the journal when she was done, Chloe grinned up at him. "Yep."

She checked her amulet around her neck, and the switchblade in her pocket she was thankful she hadn't had an opportunity or need to use yet.

"After you."

He'd lead the way anyway.

He gave her a brief smile when she told him to lead the way, because, yeah, he absolutely would. Still, he stayed mostly right next to her as they moved through the barracks, looking for the elevator down into the newly opened passages.

It didn't take them too long to find it, and that was when Derek shifted a bit, moving from next to her to slightly in front of her. Whatever was down there, he wanted to face it first.

"Stay close," he said as they stepped into the elevator, though it was probably unnecessary. He knew Chloe wasn't stupid enough to wander off by herself. It just - made him feel better to say it.

She stuck close. Goosebumps traversed her bare arms, traveling along her spine and down the length of her legs. While she was excited for a chance at answers, she was remembering one too many horror stories that often ended with re-animated corpses crawling up her legs, or half-demons trying to possess her. This was new--unknown. She had learned to begin to expect the unexpected.

This however...

She didn't know what the unexpected might entail.

Then they were moving downward, and Chloe jumped, heart leaping in her chest. A hand automatically clasped Derek's sleeve before she chastised herself and let go.

This was it.

He wasn't getting his hopes up. It was completely possible that there was absolutely nothing down here, and that guy had made the message warning them off just for kicks. Or because he knew it would make people want to go down there and look, in which case there might actually be something horrible waiting for them. But no use speculating on what might be, especially when they were about to actually find out.

Derek didn't even flinch when Chloe jumped, though the hand on his sleeve made him glance at her to check if she was okay. She was.

Just being Chloe.

It made the corners of his mouth twitch upwards very briefly, before they reached the bottom and he focused all of his attention on the doors of the elevator.

The doors slid open to reveal a narrow passage of rough-hewn stone. The floor was rocky and uneven and stone supports jutted out from the walls at irregular intervals. The passage stretched away in either direction, and another passage branched off just to the right of the elevator. All three routes faded quickly into darkness. The only light came from a single torch wedged into a bracket to the elevator’s left.

When the elevator doors slid open Chloe stifled her gasp, holding her breath as her heart threatened to leave her chest. Which was rather silly, really, since nothing happened.

Squinting into the darkness, Chloe lightly grasped Derek's arms on either side from behind as she peered around him, noting the one torch and nothing much else.

Three passageways to choose from.

What would be their fate?

Derek was half-prepared for something to actually attack them when the doors opened. But the only thing that appeared was a dark passageway. He tilted his head, listening for any sound of a threat, and could hear the faint sounds of someone moving. Scenting the air turned up only the smell of earth, though, so he frowned a bit.

"There's someone down here," he told Chloe quietly. "Could be another explorer. Could not." So be careful, but he left that unsaid.

He reached up, intending to tug down the torch next to the elevator.

"Any opinion on which way we should go?"

She blinked at that, oddly thankful when she saw Derek reach for the torch. "Maybe I should handle that," She hedged after a moment. "Just in case..."

Yeah. Just in case.

"Hopefully it's someone else doing the same thing we are." Still. Better not take any chances.

Then, at his question Chloe emphatically murmured, "Not right. The dumb heroines always choose to go right and end up in a horrible, bloody death scene."

Not that the other hallways would be any better.

"Good idea," he agreed, handing the torch off to her. With his night vision, she needed it more than he did, anyway.

He grunted at her hopefully comment. Yeah. Hopefully. But not something they should count on, which meant Derek was both listening very carefully and scenting the air, in case someone - or something - came closer.

There was an almost smile at Chloe's comment, then he nodded. "Left it is." He started off, trusting Chloe to be behind him.

She accepted the torch, tested its weight, and made sure she had a firm grasp on it. She did not want this light going out for any reason.

Watching Derek head off, Chloe followed behind and to his side just a bit, so she could attempt to glimpse something in the darkness ahead. Her eyes were having trouble focusing with the bright flames near her head and into the dark beyond, however. After a while she held the torch away from her a little bit, giving her eyes time to adjust.

"See anything?" She whispered it.

"No," he replied as they walked. Then he stopped, head tilted again. There was definitely someone down here, and they were getting closer.

"We're going to have company," he warned, tensing a bit. He almost wished he'd attempted a Change before coming down here, but he couldn't risk forcibly Changing back in the middle of something.

But then he caught a somewhat familiar scent, took a second to place it, and relaxed a bit.

"It's okay. It's another explorer."
