Sollux hasn't entirely recovered from the stocks either, but he needs to eat. And he'd wanted to talk to Joe, so he makes his way down to the kitchen and peeks inside. The cook looks busy, but he doesn't seem to have any company so Sollux enters.
Joe turns to the voice and gives the boy a nod of greeting. "Sollux. How y'goin' lad? M'alright. The lass Yuna did some of her magical healin' stuff an' now I'm right as rain."
He smiles. Hey man, Joe feels awesome compared to how he was yesterday, even if it still hurts like hell to move. So long as no one or nothing touches his back and he takes a break every now and then, he'll be just fine.
Joe grins. "Now that I can't be sayin', Sollux. Nieta will let you all know when the time is right and it'd be wrong of me to steal that spill from her."
He knows how excited she is for the upcoming event. "So I'll just say that I'm cookin' up the biggest feast you will have seen in this Keep so far."
"Aye, maybe. Or it could be the perfect time for it. Group morale's been kinda down and out lately, Sollux. I reckon people need somethin' happier fer a change."
All the while he continues to work, hands moving with expert precision to slice and dice and do whatever is required of them. "Besides, this happens every year. Y'can't change the day of an annual event."
At least he thinks it's annual. Time is kind of hard to keep track of in this place.
"You really think you can keep people in a place like this happy? We're stuck here because nothing else exists...or that's what you guys tell us, at least."
Sollux watches, but stays far enough away to not be a bother.
Joe pauses for a brief moment and sighs. "I been here for a long time, Sollux. So long that I can't even tell ye the exact number of years."
As far as Joe's concerned, he's been here since the destruction first started. "Y'learn to take the little things as they come. I've got some fockin' good friends here, a job I love and a room without rent. Sure it ain't ideal, but it's better than bein' dead."
At the question Joe looks thoughtful, his expression clouding a little in remembrance. It's been a long time since he's seen home. "I came here just the same as you lot did. Woke up here one day with no idea what was what."
He stops his work and leans on the bench as gently as he can without hurting his back. Joe suppresses a wince.
"I kinda picked up the kitchen gig on my own. I like to cook and the Keep didn't have one."
Joe frowns and shakes his head. "And that's about the end of that."
"So just anybody who sticks around long enough can end up working here? Or is there something special to it?"
Not that he wants a job, he's just curious what makes the staff different from the rest of them. Aside from listening more closely to Isabel and whatever the lord says...if he ever says ANYTHING.
"Hey. Sup?"

He moves further into the kitchen, peering at all the stuff Joe has going.

His expression took a downward turn, memories flooding back in scattered pieces. "It hasn't always been smooth sailin' in this Keep."

And a whole lot more. "I can't say more than that, lad. At least not until m'back is healed up and I'm free to take another lashing."
Which he will willingly do if it helps these people along.
